arche noVa (AN) is a German NGO founded in 1992, working in humanitarian aid/emergency, transitional and development contexts in 16 countries all over the world.

AN expertise is in WASH sector, livelihood and DRR with a wide range of activities to support local communities: construction and rehabilitation of sustainable water structures, installation of filtering systems to improve water quality, hygiene promotion, latrine construction/rehabilitation, promotion of alternative livelihoods and climate- smart agriculture, capacity building of target communities and Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction initiatives among others.

Since 2012, arche noVa has consolidated its presence in the Eastern African region through a Coordination Development Office which supports activities in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Somaliland and Sudan.

arche noVa has a Temporal Security Assistant vacancy based in Nairobi.

Title: Security Assistant

Work quota: 100% – temporary position for 2 months (until end of November 2024) – possibility for extension and changes in job description by the end of the contractual period.

Duty Station: arche noVa, regional office at Nairobi (El Molo Drive 38, Lavington, NBO)

Reports to: arche noVa Programme Coordinator (Head of Office)

Technical advisory and support: Global Security Advisor (HQ)

Summary of duties:

  • Manages the overall Arche noVasecurity system of the regional office in Lavington
  • In charge of implementing the “Security Reinforcement Plan” of the office (cf. attached plan).
  • Be well informed about the major security issues in East Africa.
  • -Keep all related Arche noVastaff informed about on-going security issues
  • Stay connected to all security information provider (INSO, UNDSS, ..)
  • Brief colleagues on International SOS service support
  • Liaise with the guarding company, and ensure all security procedures are being observed.
  • Establish the plan for Arche noVacompound security improvement (incl. the budget)
  • Review existing security protocols and related security documents and ensure that they are being updated.
  • Make sure that procedures for field trips are followed
  • Put in place coordination mechanism with security focal points of NGO’s and INGOs in Nairobi. Attend regular security meetings
  • Produce weekly security reports for all Arche noVacountry offices (Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Sudan, Somalia, Somaliland). Copy the Programme Coordination + Global Security Advisor
  • Network with other security focal points and collect all information regarding security in the region
  • Organise briefings for staff departing on the field
  • Revise and update the Local Security Plan and SOPs for all 6 East African Countries
  • Report any security issues to the NGO Forum
  • Ensure incident report form is filled in and sent to HQ in case of security incident
  • Support staff in understanding context analysis, network development and social structure of local communities
  • Provide advice on measures to safeguarding and security of Arche noVateam and management of security incidents
  • Ensure that hibernation stock is in place in the office compound and regularly check expiry dates
  • Put in place a coordination and information sharing mechanism with and all 6 country offices
  • -Ensure all country offices are properly informed and get the appropriate newsletters

Expected key results:

  • The office reinforcement plan has been implemented by end November at the latest
  • The AN staff at NBO office has been trained and informed on major security improvements (key management, door lock, items storage, etc..)
  • Security protocols and instructions (ex. SoP on key management) are reviewed and followed by staff
  • Security Management Plan, contingencies and SOPs are updated
  • Coordination mechanism are in place with all arche noVa country offices
  • A comprehensive report is being produced at the end of the contracting period to inform AN management about the major improvement and measures that were implemented (when, what, where, how….)

General tasks:

  • Participate in key staff meetings
  • Provide accurate reporting to Programme Coordinator and – in her absence -to the HR manager and the Global Security Advisor

Other tasks: The Security Assistant should be ready to execute other tasks related to his/her background and assigned by the Programme Coordinator but not specified under key tasks and responsibilities.

Qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor of Arts in Criminology & Security Studies or relevant field
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience
  • INGO/NGO experience is an added advantage
  • Has applied knowledge of security operations technical processes which must be adhered to in day-to-day work
  • Has supported in providing ad-hoc technical guidance to staff members.
  • Problem solving, client orientation, behavioural flexibility, initiative, attention to detail, good communication skills, and teamwork. Trustworthy with a high sense of responsibility.

The interview for Temporal Security Assistant will be done on a rolling basis

The salary ranges for this position between Ksh 60,000-100,000
