Org. Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Global Service Centre (UNGSC) provides critical Supply Chain, Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies services and Training to all Secretariat Entities, Peacekeeping and Special Political Missions, Agencies, Funds and Programmes of the UN system worldwide. The position is located in the Analytics and Location Intelligence Unit (ALIU) of the Client Solutions Delivery Section (CSDS) within the Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunication Technologies (SGITT) at the UNGSC, Brindisi, Italy. The incumbent will work under the supervision of the Chief ALIU or other designated officer.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Associate Geospatial Information Officer is responsible for the following: • Engage in the timely preparation, maintenance, and provision of geospatial information and maps in support of the Mission's operations; Collect, process, and evaluate geospatial data, including vector, raster and thematic data; Compile large-scale operation maps and small-scale briefing/report maps; and conduct geospatial/terrain analysis studies and prediction of the effects of terrain, weather and situation on the Mission's operations. • Assist in performing quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) on all products generated and disseminated by the Section/Unit, including data and maps; Assist in providing geospatial information training and education programmes for Mission staff. • Assist in managing the technical work of junior staff. • Archive Mission geospatial data and maintain the Mission's geo-database system; Maintain the Missions' intranet map server(s) and its associated services. • Assist in the sharing of geospatial data with other offices of the Mission, as well as field offices of other UN agencies including the Humanitarian Information Centre (HICs), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the host nation; Assist in the timely exchange of geospatial information between the Mission and the DFS Cartographic Section; Assist in undertaking day-to-day geospatial operation matters between the Mission and the Geospatial Information Section of the UN Global Service Centre (UNGSC). • Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns using basic machine learning techniques and statistical methods to identify relevant features and variables in structured and unstructured sources of information and data. • Process, analyze, and interpret aerial/satellite imagery for intelligence applications, • Undertake spatial and terrain analysis for geospatial intelligence applications. • Assist with the collection and analysis of data as well as preparation of data presentations and reports for information sharing, responding to queries, knowledge management, planning and decision making. • Assist with visualizations and updating information material such as web pages or brochures. • Contribute to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting. Assist in management and coordination of the global service for Groundwater Exploration & Monitoring • Perform other duties as required.

Education
An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in geospatial information science, cartography, geography or other disciplines that involve geospatial information-related programmes or related fields is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two (2) additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Job - Specific Qualification
A technical or vocational certificate in Geographic Information System (GIS) and remote sensing is desirable. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in the field of geospatial information (e.g. geospatial information applications, geospatial database management, geospatial/terrain analysis, cartography and mapping, image processing, GPS and surveying) or related fields is required. Experience in conflict surveillance, damage and impact assessment, border-crossing monitoring, or incident analysis is required. Experience providing services in the field of geospatial information or in a field operation of the United Nations common system or comparable international organization is desirable. Experience in the use of geographic information systems (GIS) software and applications is required Experience with spatial database systems such as ArcGIS ERDAS Imagine and ENVI is desirable. Experience in providing and coordinating groundwater services is desirable Experience in data analytics or related areas is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required.
