Organizational Background

The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization with its headquarters in Vienna, Austria is the international organization setting up the global verification system foreseen under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), which is the treaty banning any nuclear-weapon-test explosion or any other nuclear explosion. The Treaty provides for a global verification regime, including a network of 337 facilities worldwide, a communications system, an international data centre and on-site inspections to monitor compliance.

Organizational Setting

This position is located in the Monitoring and Data Analysis Section, International Data Centre Division (IDC).

Reporting Lines

Under the supervision of the Chief, Monitoring and Data Analysis Section, to:

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Perform interactive analysis of radionuclide data as required, including the analysis of gamma and beta-gamma spectra from particulate and noble gas detection stations; 
  2. Review the work of associate radionuclide analysts and provide feedback as required;
  3. Support the testing and evaluation of the IDC applications software in coordination with the Scientific Applications Section of the IDC;
  4. Contribute to and actively participate in the training and coaching of associate radionuclide analysts;
  5. Execute and optimize assigned tasks to ensure efficient and timely production of reviewed IDC products in the radionuclide technologies;
  6. Propose and implement plans to enhance procedures, rules and guidelines for radionuclide analysis;
  7. Substantially contribute to the training of participants from States Signatories in coordination with the Capacity Building Section of the IDC;
  8. Interact as necessary with other sections and units in order to ensure smooth implementation of the operational tasks;
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

  • University degree in nuclear science with strong background in gamma and beta/gamma spectroscopy and radiation detection methods, or relevant experience in radionuclide data analysis. 

Work Experience and Qualifications

  • At least five (5) years relevant working experience with radionuclide spectra analysis, air monitoring, detection equipment, and environmental influences on radionuclide monitoring;
  • Experience in computer-based systems preferably Linux-based including programming languages, data processing tools;
  • Proven ability to monitor the work quality of others and provide relevant feedback.

Languages

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential;
  • Knowledge of other official CTBTO languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is desirable.

Remuneration

CTBTO offers an attractive compensation and benefits package in accordance with the policies of the International Civil Service Commission. The salary offered may be subject to deductions to the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund and/or Health Insurance Scheme.
