Org. Setting and Reporting
The Department of Operational Support was established to provide operational advisory services to operating entities across the Secretariat, including other departments, offices away from headquarters, field missions, and regional commissions. The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also supports office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration. This post is located in the Plumbing Shop of the Mechanical and Plumbing Unit (MPU), Plant Engineering Section (PES), Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS), Division of Administration (DOA), Department of Operational Support (DOS). The incumbent reports to the Foreperson of the Unit and a Working Leader, Plumber of the Plumbing Shop, MPU.
Responsibilities
Under the overall guidance of the Foreperson and the direct supervision of the Working Leader of the Plumbing Shop, the incumbent shall perform the following duties and responsibilities: • Maintain and install all existing plumbing systems; • Ensure that the plumbing installations/works meet safety standards and are in accordance with NYC building codes, norms and regulations; • Maintain and install all water, waste, vent, steam, gas systems, plumbing fixtures, steam stations, sprinklers, and any other plumbing related equipment; • Set up system routes, place and cut route openings, and place hangers for proper pitching and elevations; • Perform work based on building plans, blueprints or sketches; • Plan and lay out the routing placements as necessary; • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors;

Education
High school or equivalent Trade School Diploma is required.
Job - Specific Qualification
Registration as NYC Journeyman Plumber and/or Fire Suppression Piping Installer (or equivalent) is desirable. NYC Certificate of Fitness for Sprinkler and Standpipe (or equivalent) is desirable. Certification as a Backflow Tester is desirable.
Work Experience
A minimum of three years of work experience in the plumbing trade is required. Experience in relevant practical work in repairing, installing, servicing and maintaining plumbing systems and equipment is required. Experience with the use of hand and power tools related to the trade is required.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the position advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is an advantage.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by a competency-based interview.

Appointment or assignment against this position is for an initial period of one year. This position is subject to local recruitment pursuant to Staff Rule 4.4 of the United Nations Staff Rules.
