We are seeking a person who is passionate about training eye doctors for Papua New Guinea to take on the role of Senior Lecturer in Ophthalmology and join us in our mission of eliminating avoidable blindness in PNG.
As part of the The University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) School of Medicine and Health Sciences, this role works in close collaboration with the PNG Chief Ophthalmologist and Port Moresby General Hospital Eye Care Team, and the eye sector countrywide.
It will draw on professional and collegial support available through The Fred Hollows Foundation NZ Medical Director and our network of Pacific ophthalmologists. As the Senior Lecturer, you will teach, mentor, and support postgraduate ophthalmology students, ensuring they receive comprehensive academic, clinical and surgical training to become effective ophthalmologists.
Over the next two years you will play a key role in transitioning the Post Graduate Diploma in Eye Care and Master of Medicine (Ophthalmology) programmes into the brand new, purpose-built, PNG Centre for Eye Health, which is due to open in 2026.
The ideal candidate will be a highly experienced Ophthalmologist with expertise in Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS), internationally recognised qualifications, and a passion for teaching. Experience in low-resource settings and familiarity with PNG or the Pacific is a plus. Willingness to travel within PNG is required.
