CONTEXTUAL BACKGROUND

The IRC has been present in Nigeria since 2012 when the organization responded to flooding in Kogi state. In February 2014 the IRC moved into Adamawa State in NE Nigeria to provide humanitarian interventions through a multi-sectoral, integrated approach for conflict affected populations. IRC Nigeria now operates a country office in Abuja and field offices in Mubi and Yola of Adamawa State, Maiduguri and Monguno of Borno state and Damaturu of Yobe State. Currently, IRC Nigeria implements programs primary health care, nutrition, environmental health, women’s protection and empowerment, protection, child protection, education, food security & livelihoods.

Job Overview/Summary

Gidan Bayani, the Nigerian instance of the Signpost initiative, is a pioneering digital information project within IRC's Nigeria Country Program. This initiative leverages social media, digital and other offline platforms to deliver essential, timely, and accurate information to internally displaced persons (IDPs), host communities, returnees, and refugees. Gidan Bayani disseminates critical information in multiple languages to ensure accessibility and relevance for the communities it serves.

The Signpost Moderator plays a vital role in fostering community engagement by moderating online and offline discussions, providing accurate responses to queries, and ensuring that critical information reaches the targeted audiences in Damaturu, Yobe State.

Major Responsibilities

  • Moderate social media platforms for Gidan Bayani, ensuring respectful and constructive community interactions.
  • Respond accurately to questions from the community, addressing information gaps in areas like health, education, and protection.
  • Escalate complex queries to the Signpost Senior Editorial Officer, the community Engagement and service Mapping Officer or relevant stakeholders as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the editorial team to keep content updated, consistent, and aligned with the latest project objectives.
  • Gather and analyze feedback from community engagements to improve the relevance of information provided.
  • Attend training sessions organized by IRC to remain up to date with content management tools and project guidelines.

Key Working Relationships

Position Reports to: The Signpost Moderator will report to the Community Engagement, Protection and Service Mapping Officer.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, or another relevant field

Work Experience:

  • 2+ years of experience in community engagement or social media moderation
  • Experience working with a humanitarian organization for at least 1 year.

Demonstrated Technical Skills:

  • Resilience in high-pressure environments and the ability to multitask.
  • Attention to detail and adherence to deadlines.
  • Strong cultural and social awareness of contexts in Damaturu, Yobe State.
  • Excellent communication skills and interpersonal abilities.
  • Experience in a humanitarian organization a plus.
  • Knowledge of IDP issues in Northeast desired.
  • High emotional intelligence (our users are in difficult periods of their lives and moderators need to empathize with them).
  • An excellent level of English.
  • An understanding of the subtlety of language and an ability to apply communication guidelines in written responses.
  • A typing speed of 30 words per minute.  

Languages:

  • An excellent level of English.
  • A native speaker of one of our audiences’ key languages (Hausa, Kanuri, Barbur, Margi, Shuwa Arab, Fulani/Fulfulde).

Computer/Other Tech Requirements:

  • Familiarity with content management systems and social media platforms.
