BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 22 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC in Richmond opened its doors in October 2015 to give refugee families the tools they need to take control over their new lives in the greater Richmond area, assisting them toward self-sufficiency, self-reliance, and community integration.
SCOPE OF FINANCIAL CAPABILITIES INTERN WORK: The Financial Capabilities Intern works with IRC Financial Coaches who provide educational tools and resources, financial coaching, and guidance to clients accessing IRC loan products to meet client-identified goals to increase their financial capability.The financial capabilities internship will primarily focus on IOM refugee travel loan education and assistance, tax education through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, and prioritizing women's financial education and capabilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Support education surrounding client’s IOM travel loan processes and payments
Assist the VITA program by screening clients, helping to prepare tax returns, orreviewing returns for accuracy
Create and establish women centered workshops and programming to encourage gender equality in access to and knowledge of financial systems and processes
Support facilitation of credit education and financial literacy training with clients
Develop personal finance tools and resources, including translatable user guides, to share with clients
Assist clients with IRC’s Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO) loan applications and access to bank accounts

Familiarity with a coaching model and related activities
Proven ability to work with consideration and respect for cross-cultural differences
Excellent communication and organization skills
Ability to work independently
Computer skills, including Microsoft Office programs and internet research
Enthusiasm for helping people to learn and demonstrated professionalism
Interns must be able to work at least 15 hours a week for at least three months
- Must have a valid driver’s license and access to an insured vehicle
This position is unpaid and reports to the Financial Coaches.
