Overall purpose of the role:
The Protection Assistant, under the supervision of the Protection team lead, is responsible for the day to day implementation of the various protection activities in the field locations under his/her responsibility.
This includes conduct Protection Monitoring, referrals and follow up of referrals, (including establishing referral pathways), identification of IPA beneficiaries and follow up of cases, psychosocial support activities.
The Protection Assistant will also be responsible for supporting needs and programmatic assessments, supporting the preparation of activity and protection reports and analysis (information collection, community consultations, etc.), identifying and communicating protection concerns in his/her locations, identifying and communicating programmatic needs in targeted locations, supporting the Officers in providing capacity building to key stakeholders, and in collecting and managing project data ensuring the highest standards of data and information protection and confidentiality.
Responsibilities:
- Hold office at the protection desk to enable IDPs to access information.
- Refers individual cases for assistance to service providers in the IDP sites or to the Protection Officer for their follow up or action on the respective cases.
- Record all the cases received in the protection desk on the intake form and share it with the Protection Officer on a weekly basis.
- Visit IDPs household to identify persons with specific needs (PSNs) or to follow up on identified PSNs under the supervision of the Protection Officer.
- Support the Protection Officer in the follow up with the relevant partners on individual cases which have been referred as needed.
- Contribute to the elaboration of work plans and ensure to implement program activities accordingly.
- Support the Protection Officer in the organizing of trainings, workshops and meetings for the IDPs and relevant stakeholders on IDPs rights, responsibilities and other protection related material.
- Assist the Protection Officer with the establishment of good working relationships with community activists, chiefs and other relevant actors to encourage participation in, support for and a better understanding of the program activities.
- Conduct daily visits in the IDP sites to observe, identify and collect information on the situation of the Internally Displaced People (IDPs), taking into special account vulnerable people, recording and reporting on gaps that may exist in service provision.
- Monitor the statues of the IDP sites (schools, child friendly spaces, water points, clinics, shelters, latrines, roads and etc) and report any gaps, misuse or repairs needed.
- Support in community mobilization and information of leadership structures, women’s committee, elderly and disable committee, youth committee as well as other committees or groups.
- Collect data on and report any incidents, threats or risks in the camp using the incident report form.
- Monitor distribution and other camp events to ensure equal access, non – discrimination, protection of extremely vulnerable individuals and compliance with Codes of Conduct.
- Conduct regular focus group discussions or other conversational forms with the community to understand their perception of service provision within the camp.
- Identify protection issues and report to protection officers for referral to the relevant actors.
- Report any discriminatory access to basic provisions and services as water, food, shelter, basic health services, particularly for persons with specific needs.
- Translation from Nuer to English;
- Perform any other duties requested by protection officer and protection Senior Officer.
Experience and technical competencies:
- Previous experience in community – based activities including mobilization, awareness campaigns or any other activity that included the involvement of the community members and /or leaders
- Basic knowledge and understanding of human rights and protection principles.
- Experience in carrying out and supervising training at different scales with different partners
- Strong relationship building/ interpersonal skill;
- Basic protection and human rights training;
- Positive attitude
- Energetic and interested.
- Field oriented
Education:
- A diploma or its equivalent in a relevant field.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Email application software
Languages: (indicate fluency level)
- Fluency in Nuer (Read, write, speak and understand) is must.
- Working knowledge of English language is desirable.
Oral Arabic is desirable.
