Mission and objectives
The Office of the UNHCR was established on 14 December 1950 by the UN General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees. It strives to ensure that everyone can exercise the right to seek asylum and find safe refuge in another State, with the option to return home voluntarily, integrate locally or to resettle in a third country (www.unhcr.org)
Context
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) plays a key role in providing access to education for refugees, asylum seekers, stateless people, and other displaced populations.
It considers education a fundamental right and an essential tool to help refugees rebuild their lives, acquire skills and contribute positively to their host communities or countries of origin when they return. In emergency situations, UNHCR rapidly establishes temporary learning spaces for displaced children to minimize educational interruptions. It supports non-formal education programs for children and young people who have been unable to follow a conventional school curriculum. These programs include vocational training, life-skills education, and adult literacy.
UNHCR advocates that governments integrate refugee children into their national education systems, rather than creating parallel systems. It works in collaboration with agencies such as UNICEF, UNESCO, NGOs and local governments to maximize the impact of its educational interventions. There is therefore a need for an Associate Data Officer in Education to focus on the collection, management, analysis, and interpretation of data related to educational initiatives. This key role will assist in the development of evidence-based reports to guide strategic educational decisions and improve access, quality, and sustainability of educational initiatives.”
