Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Deputy Head of the Field Legal Office, the intern will work alongside other Legal Translators, assisting the legal professionals in the Field Legal Office with translation tasks. The intern may be assigned to the following duties: • Translate documents as requested by the Field Legal Office, from Arabic to English and vice versa preserving the meaning, as well as tone, cultural references, and nuances of meaning. • Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to best practices for protecting sensitive documents and meetings. • Translate legal documents including but not limited to contracts, letters, investigation reports, witness statements, court files, UNRWA's Dispute Tribunal documents, and any other legal documents. • Revise documents developed by the Field Legal Office to ensure the texts are error-free and properly convey the intended meaning. • Maintain continuous communication and consultation with the Field Legal Office staff regarding the best use and understanding of the legal expressions. • Respect the translation delivery dates, especially the tasks related to UNRWA's Dispute Tribunal. • When requested, provide interpreter service during any meeting between the Field Legal Office staff and others. • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications/special skills
• Enrolled in a graduate program (Master’s degree or equivalent), or recently graduated with a specialization in Translation, Interpretation, Linguistics, Languages, Law, or a related field. • Completed courses or training in law-related areas, including but not limited to public international law, administrative law, contract law, or commercial law. COMPETENCIES • Ability to accurately translate complex legal texts, preserving meaning, tone, and nuances. • Acute ability to understand and work with different policies, procedures, and work methods. • Strong ability to review and revise translations for accuracy, consistency, and clarity. • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. • Ability to demonstrate openness in sharing information, keeping people informed, and preserving the confidentiality of sensitive information obtained throughout the course of work. • Collaborative team player with the ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines under pressure. • Highly organized with strong political awareness and knowledge of administrative investigation theories and practices. • Ability to plan and prioritize tasks effectively. • Proficient in standard software applications such as MS Word, Excel, SharePoint, and PowerPoint.
Languages
• Fluency in both Arabic and English (written and spoken) is essential. • Excellent command of legal terminology in both languages.
Additional Information
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS • Familiarity with the UN Common system and practices • Additional qualifications in legal translation or interpretation would be an asset. • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience, although prior work experience will be an advantage.
