Mission and objectives
The mission of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented.
In carrying out its mission OHCHR will:
Give priority to addressing the most pressing human rights violations, both acute and chronic, particularly those that put life in imminent peril;
Focus attention on those who are at risk and vulnerable on multiple fronts;
Pay equal attention to the realization of civil, cultural, economic, political, and social rights, including the right to development; and
Measure the impact of its work through the substantive benefit that is accrued, through it, to individuals around the world.
Operationally, OHCHR works with governments, legislatures, courts, national institutions, civil society, regional and international organizations, and the United Nations system to develop and strengthen capacity, particularly at the national level, for the protection of human rights in accordance with international norms.
Institutionally, OHCHR is committed to strengthening the United Nations human rights programme and to providing it with the highest quality support. OHCHR is committed to working closely with its United Nations partners to ensure that human rights form the bedrock of the work of the United Nations.

Context
The OPT Office mandate includes monitoring and reporting, technical assistance and capacity-building for the Palestinian Authority and civil society. OHCHR oPt is specifically mandated by Human Rights Council resolutions S-9/1 and S-12/1 of 2009 to monitor and report regularly on the human rights situation in the OPT, including East Jerusalem. Pursuant to its mandate, OHCHR submits periodic reports to the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly and informs discussions within other United Nations bodies. In addition, OHCHR oPt is the coordinator of the Humanitarian Protection Cluster. The UNV will work closely with the Head of Office assisting in general human rights related work and carrying out planning and organization tasks in advocacy and communications. The UN Volunteer will join the International staff of OCHR and work from Amman to support the OHCHR work in state of Palestine.
Task description
Under the direct supervision of Head of Capacity Building, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
• Support the Office in a variety of tasks, such as drafting correspondence, preparing meeting materials, briefing notes, collecting and compiling relevant information and as-sist in day-to-day tasks relating to human rights matters in the OPT.
• Conduct background research and contribute to the drafting of a variety of written products in close cooperation with the Monitoring, Capacity-building and Protection Cluster Teams. regarding the human rights situation in the OPT.
• Support the Office’s programmatic work, including preparing and organizing activities that enhance public awareness on critical human rights issues and international human rights obligations of all duty-bearers.
• Support the NHRI, civil society and national institutions to engage with and integrate UN human rights mechanism’s recommendations in programmatic, policy and advoca-cy work.
•Assists in the design and implementation of OHCHR programmatic activities for na-tional institutions and civil society, including needs assessments, public information campaigns, preparing and delivering training material.
• Assist in the relevant UN Country Team's task forces and working groups, with a view to promoting human rights mainstreaming in development and recovery work.
• Monitor the implementation of OHCHR programmatic activities, evaluate the impact of outputs in relation to the planned outcomes, and provide inputs to OHCHR's internal and external programme reporting.
• Assist in the planning, preparation and collection process of monitoring and evaluation exercises of Office’s projects on human rights including AWP and mid-term reviews.
• Perform other relevant duties as required.
