Mission and objectives
UNODC's mission is to contribute to global peace and security, human rights and development by making the world safer from drugs, crime, corruption and terrorism.
Context
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is a global leader in the fight against illicit drugs and international crime. Established in 1997, UNODC is mandated to assist Member States in their struggle against illicit drugs, crime and terrorism.
In 2011, UNODC launched the Global Firearms Programme to assist Member States in preventing and countering transnational illicit trafficking in firearms through the ratification and implementation of the Protocol against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Their Parts and Components and Ammunition (FP), supplementing the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC). The Programme develops around different complementary clusters, which include advocacy and awareness raising; legislative and policy development; technical assistance and capacity building; technical support in firearms control; international cooperation; and research and analysis.
This UNV assignment is part of UNODC Firearms Trafficking Section and will assist on the steps related with the implementation of the project, as well as support on the outreach products and support the Programme Officers in its tasks related to the project management as well as internal and external communications to ensure appropriate visibility.
