Overview & Responsibilities
Gender equality is among IDLO’s core values and guiding principles. IDLO’s Strategic Plan 2025-2028 states that: Gender equality, including the ability of women and girls to enjoy the full range of their human rights and meaningfully participate in all aspects of society, is a key aspect of human rights and a necessary condition for progress towards the entire 2030 Agenda”. It identifies reducing the justice gap for women and girls as one of six IDLO Outcomes. More specifically, it includes: (a) promoting the elimination of discriminatory laws and practices: (b) support institutions to address the justice needs of women and girls; (c) protect women and girls rights in digital spaces; (d) champion women’s leadership in the justice sector; and (e) empower women and girls to claim their rights. The Strategic Plan emphasizes that “IDLO promotes gender equality by pursuing it as a stand-alone goal as well as by mainstreaming it throughout its work”.
Under the direct supervision of the Senior Legal Advisor on Gender, and working closely with the Gender Team, the Gender and Law Intern will be asked to assist by performing the following duties:
- Support the drafting and finalization of at least one research products
- Draft at least one briefing materials and fact sheets on gender, justice and rule of law issues;
- Conduct mapping research on gender and law issues;
- Keep abreast of and document current and upcoming gender, justice and rule of law events, global conferences and seminars;
- Support preparation of at least two events on justice for women. This may include tasks related to developing the concept notes, providing background research notes, coordinating the agenda, logistics, social media and documentation;
- Support drafting of gender analysis and gender news feeds;
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Education
- Master’s degree or higher in law, international affairs, gender studies, or similar field.
Work experience
- Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for the internship but are encouraged to list all relevant work experience in their application.
Languages
- Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are required.
- French language skills are highly desirable.
Competencies
- Demonstrated skills in research across a varied range of law, gender justice and development issues is highly desirable.
- Competency in office software including Excel and Share-point.
- Good team player, highly motivated, strong interpersonal skills, positive attitude, flexible mind, comfortable working in multi-cultural settings;
- Demonstrated ability to work proactively and independently, including as part of a small team;
- Ability to produce well drafted and analysed work product in a timely manner, exercise sound judgment, and manage and prioritize multiple assignments
Terms & Conditions
IDLO provides all full-time interns with a monthly stipend of €600. Internships are offered for 3 months and are renewable up to a maximum of 6 months. Full-time placements (5 days a week) are strongly preferred. Applicants available for less than 5 days a week will not be considered.
