What we do
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.
Purpose
The General Practitioner (GP), as part of an ICRC health team, provides consultations and supervise care. He/She works in ICRC assisted or independent health structures in limited resources settings and challenging security environment. He/She is the technical referent for general medicine/internal medicine for in and out-patient related matters.
Accountabilities & Functional responsibilities

Provides and supervises general medicine consultations in line with the internationally/ICRC recognized standards, on evidence-based practices and ensures follow-up;

Responsible for the clinical management in general / internal medicine of in and out-patients within the supported health structures, including compliance to the set admission criteria;

Ensures precise, clear and timely medical documentations and reporting;

Ensures that all required resources are available to provide safe care and related medical procedures and treatments; familiar with the ICRC/WHO standard list of drugs and alternative treatments, if necessary;

In collaboration with the other members of the ICRC medical team, provides technical advice and supports local counterparts to maintain/develop the local capacities and maintain/reach international standards;

Contributes to the contingency plan and other plans of action for the hospital in collaboration with the hospital management and (sub)-delegation;

Consults with the Health Unit in Geneva in case of exceedingly difficult cases warranting a second opinion or where a clinical incident or near miss has occurred;

Always being conscious of the limitations (human & material resources), adapting the practice accordingly and seeks advice when required.
Certifications and professional experience required
- Board certified in General/Family/Internal Medicine with a minimum of 2 years experience after certification.
- A valid license to practice in your country of residence.
- ACLS certification or ACLS-refresher course dated less than 5 years.
- Previous international humanitarian and/or development experience in low-income countries (NGO’s, IO or charity organization) is an asset.
- Previous experience(s) within the Red Cross & Red Crescent movement is an asset.
Desired profile and skills
- Very good English verbal and written communication skills (C1);
- French, Arabic, Spanish or Russian, as a second language, with good verbal and written communication skills;
- Good command of computer tools (Outlook…);
- Certificates on basic security course (ICRC & IFRC) and on basic ICRC-facts dated no more than 5 years, are strongly recommended before the recruitment interview (link: );
- Comfortable performing medical care with limited resources;
- Able to include the family/relatives for planning and delivering of the care, including post discharge;
- Able to work under pressure and lead a multicultural team in complex environments;
- Good organizational skills, capacity to manage and work within a team;
- Able to develop and supervise local staff involved in general medicine;
- Strongly motivated by humanitarian work;
- Sensitivity to cultural, ethnic and gender diversity;
- Positive, flexible and able to adapt him/herself to harsh living conditions and/or unstable security environment;
Our operational & field constraints
- In line with the principle of neutrality, the ICRC does not assign personnel to a country of which they are nationals.
- Candidates must be in good health and will have to do a medical check-up prior to departure in the field.
- Candidates must possess a driving license (for manual transmission vehicles) with practice.
- Candidates must be prepared to accept unaccompanied postings (i.e. no spouse, partner, children or dependents).
