IRC BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the IRC is a leading organization providing relief, protection, and resettlement services for refugees and victims of oppression throughout the U.S. IRC in San Diego has resettled over 31,000 refugees to San Diego County over the past 50 years and provides numerous program services. In San Diego, the IRC opened its doors in 1975 and has grown to serve approximately 7,000 refugee and immigrant individuals from 115 countries of origin each year through 5 different departments.

SCOPE OF INTERNSHIP:

In this internship, students will contribute to the Digital Inclusion Program, which helps refugees, newcomers, and low-income families develop essential digital skills to improve their lives and job opportunities. The internship will focus on Data Visualization tasks, including calculating key metrics, creating Excel macros, and designing visual reports to communicate data insights. Interns will collaborate with the team to analyze data and present it in clear, actionable formats that support decision-making and program evaluation.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

With oversight from the Senior Digital Inclusion Specialist, the Digital Access Intern will:

  • Use Excel pivot tables and Power BI to calculate key metrics and analyze data for tracking program performance.

  • Create and implement Excel macros to automate data management processes and enhance efficiency.

  • Design clear, concise visual reports to communicate data insights effectively to stakeholders.

  • Participate in data quality activities to ensure accuracy, consistency, and integrity across all datasets.

  • Implement SharePoint to develop training sites, create materials, and set up a calendar for team coordination.

 

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES: 

  • Interns will gain expertise in data analysis and visualization to support decision-making in a nonprofit focused on refugees and underserved communities.

  • Interns will improve their ability to manage and ensure data accuracy through quality control activities, while learning about CRM systems and information management used in the nonprofit sector.

  • Interns will practice designing and presenting visual reports to effectively communicate data insights to diverse stakeholders.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must be currently enrolled in or have recently completed an Associate’s, Bachelor’s, or Master’s program in a relevant field, such as Data Science, Information Technology,or a related discipline.

  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, macros, and Visual Basic for Applications (VBA); experience with Power BI and SharePoint is a plus.

  • Experience in data analysis, visualization, and reporting.

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to ensure data accuracy and integrity.

  • Ability to work independently, and manage time effectively.

  • Willingness to learn about the IRC and engage in cross-cultural communication with clients. 

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English. 

  • Must pass the IRC background check.

 

 

Compensation: This is an unpaid internship opportunity.

Working Environment:

  • The Digital Inclusion and Data Visualization Internship offers flexibility, with the opportunity to be completed remotely.

  • San Diego Office hours are scheduled Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm PST. Selected interns can choose their hours based on this window of availability.
