About IRRI
The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is dedicated to reducing poverty and hunger through rice science; improving the health and welfare of rice farmers and consumers; and protecting the rice-growing environment for future generations. IRRI is an independent, nonprofit, research and educational institute, founded in 1960 by the Ford and Rockefeller foundations with support from the Philippine government. The institute, headquartered in Los Baños, Philippines, has offices in 17 rice-growing countries in Asia and Africa, and over 1,000 staff.

Working with in-country partners, IRRI develops advanced rice varieties that yield more grain and better withstand pests and disease as well as flooding, drought, and other harmful effects of climate change.
Job Purpose

The MAFF Japan-IRRI Project on Accelerating development and scaling of agricultural innovations for reducing GHG emissions in ASEAN countries (AGRI Project) aims to accelerate the development and scaling of agricultural innovations for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in ASEAN countries, with a focus on rice production systems. Rice cultivation is a significant contributor to global GHG emissions, particularly methane. This project seeks to address this challenge by building capacity for GHG emission measurement, data analytics, and providing measurement services to IRRI researchers and partners who are developing and delivering GHG-reducing innovations to farmers.

A key component of the project is the installation of new gas chromatography (GC) units in the Soil Laboratory at IRRI Headquarters. These GCs will be used for training programs and for providing GHG measurement services to support research and scaling efforts. The project will also deliver training on data analytics to enhance the capacity of IRRI staff and partners in analyzing GHG emission data and optimizing rice-based farming systems.

The Researcher position is crucial to the successful implementation of the AGRI project. The incumbent will be responsible for the maintenance and operation of the GC units, analysis of samples, data management, and supporting capacity-building activities related to GHG measurement. This position contributes directly to the project's
goal of accelerating the development and scaling of GHG-reducing innovations in rice production.

This position will be based at the IRRI Headquarters, Los Baños, Philippines and may only be filled by permanent citizens of the Philippines.

  • Assist stakeholders in sample collection to ensure compliance to standards.
  • Generate accurate and timely reports of GC analysis results for IRRI projects and external partners
  • Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for GC operation and maintenance.
  • Contribute to the development and update of training materials
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Agricultural Science, or a related field is required with minimum of 2 years experience in operating and maintaining GC equipment and analyzing GHG samples (desirable)
