Mission and objectives
UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
Context
UN Women is the United Nations entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women (GEWE), with the aim to create a world in which every woman and girl can exercise her human rights and live up to her full potential. Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women leverages its unique triple mandate—encompassing normative support, UN system coordination, and operational activities—to mobilize urgent and sustained action to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. UN Women focuses on four strategic priorities, including governance and participation in public life; women’s economic empowerment; ending vio-ence against women and girls; and women, peace and security, humanitarian action, and disaster risk reduction.
UN Women China’s work is aligned with the 2021-2025 United Nations Sustainable Development Co-operation Framework (UNSDCF) for China to support China’s development priorities in the next five years. It is also in line with China’s 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), China’s National Human Rights Action Plan (2021-2025), and the Outline of Women's Development in China (2021-2030). UN Women China’s strategic programmatic priorities include Women's Economic Empowerment; Ending Violence Against Women; Governance and Participation in Public Life; Global Partnerships and Sustainable Financing for GEWE. UN Women China’s work is further enabled through partnership and resource mobilization, operations and management oversight, as well as communication and advocacy for GEWE.
The year 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (Bei-jing+30). Adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995 in Beijing, China, by 189 governments, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA) remains the most revolutionary blue-print for GEWE, addressing 12 critical areas such as education, health, political participation, economic empowerment, and the elimination of violence against women and girls. Addressing these issues, along with emerging priorities around climate justice and the power of digital technologies, is urgent, with just five years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Reporting to the Communications Specialist, the UNV is expected to provide high-quality support for the office’s communications work, in line with UN Women’s mandate, rules, regulations, and strategic priorities. Key responsibilities include supporting campaigns, events, and activities, with a particular focus on Beijing+30, as well as regularly updating and maintaining UN Women China’s social media channels—both domestic and international, among other key tasks. She/he also works in close collabo-ration with different programme team to exchange information and support the relevant communications work when needed.
