OVERVIEW:

The Housing Support Intern works in close coordination with the Case Management team, apartment managers, HUD case workers, and refugee families to provide post arrival casework services. They assist in helping recently arrived refugees or individuals that qualify in applying for government housing or government housing subsidies. The intern also works with the Casework Supervisor to diversify housing opportunities for refugee families, gaining valuable experience working with the refugee community and community partners.

Please note that this position is unpaid. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assisting with providing housing orientation to refugee families.

  • Solicit for donation of household items such as large pots, irons, ironing board, TVs, kettle, microwave or other necessary items for newly arrived refugees and asylees in coordination with the Case Managers.

  • Assist new families to apply for and transition into subsidized housing programs through HUD, Section 8, and City of Tucson Public Housing.

  • Work with the Casework Supervisor to maintain and establish new relationships with apartment managers and housing providers in the Tucson area. 

  • Proactively gain knowledge about the refugee program.

  • Maintain and manage client information across multiple data platforms while continuously expanding knowledge.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Strong intercultural communication skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively with people from other cultural backgrounds. 

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. 

  • Understanding and ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding client information. • Driver’s license, personal vehicle, auto insurance, a clean driving record, and willingness to drive clients and goods in personal vehicle 

  • Submit volunteer hours on a monthly basis 

CLEARANCES: 

All offers are contingent on successfully passing background and criminal history checks as required by federal and state law or by IRC policy. Ability to obtain an Arizona Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card.

COMMITMENT:

  • SUMMER: 10-20 hrs/wk for 3 months and able to commit to 3 full business days

  • FALL: Minimum 15 hrs/wk for 4 months and able to commit to 2 full business days

  • Primary availability during IRC business hours (M-F; 9:00am-5:00pm)

  • Preference given to applicants able to make multi-term commitment
