Mission and objectives

UNFPA is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Our mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled.

UNFPA’s goal is to achieve universal access to sexual and reproductive health, realize
Reproductive rights, and reduce maternal mortality to accelerate progress on the ICPD
Agenda, to improve the lives of adolescents and youth, and women, enabled by population dynamics, human rights, and gender equality.

In 2018, UNFPA launched efforts to achieve three transformative results, ambitions that promise to change the world for every man, woman, adolescent and young person:
1. Ending unmet need for family planning
2. Ending preventable maternal death
3. Ending gender-based violence and harmful practices
UNFPA recognizes that innovation is a key accelerator to achieve these results. UNFPA will harness innovation to meet tomorrow’s challenges and boost its impact, especially in addressing furthest behind populations, and leverage opportunities, social capital, funding and technology by (a) strengthening the corporate innovation architecture and capabilities, (b) scaling up innovations that have proven to be effective and impactful, (c) forming new partnerships and connecting with relevant innovation ecosystems, (d) strengthening and leveraging financing for innovation, and (e) expanding communities and culture for innovation.

Context

As of the end of April 2024, Jordan hosts over 634,728 registered Syrian refugees with 79.9% living within host communities and 20.1% living in camps, mainly Za’atari and Azraq. Among the Syrian refugee population, 36.5 % are women, 5.7% are men, 28.9 are girls and 29% are boys. Women and girls represent the majority of the refugee population (65.4%) (UNHCR). These numbers have remained consistent over the last six years, demonstrating the protracted nature of the crisis and the ongoing need for continued service provision. The SRH and GBV services were provided through the UNFPA Maternity Clinic, Primary Health Clinics and Women and Girls Safe Spaces (WGSS). UNFPA also maintained its position as co-Lead of the SRH and GBV Working Groups, at both the national and camp levels.

The response to GBV in Za'atari and Azraq Camp by UNFPA Jordan included multifaceted activities addressing the needs of survivors and those at risk. These included case management, psychosocial support, prevention efforts through awareness sessions, and out-reach to ensure accessibility and inclusivity. Engaging men and boys in outreach initiatives was crucial in promoting gender equality and challenging harmful norms. The integrated approach to SRH and GBV services significantly impacted the lives of affected populations, demonstrating UNFPA's commitment to the well-being and rights of those impacted by the Syrian refugee crisis, aiding their resilience and recovery.

The incumbent UNV will support daily operations and good performance of UNFPA partners, in particular in the area of Protection and Sexual & Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
