About this position
IDB Lab is looking for a dynamic and client-oriented individual in climate and/or biodiversity finance to support the development and supervision of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) portfolio within IDB Lab, including both operational and knowledge activities. This will include developing operations in line with both GEF programming directives and IDB Lab priorities, including promoting innovative approaches to climate change, forestry, land degradation, biodiversity, and inclusive cities.
The Venture Capital Investments Division (LAB/VCI) at IDB Lab is the division responsible for originating and managing the portfolio of reimbursable operations (equity and debt). VCI has a systemic role of filling key funding gaps, bridging key connections in different fields (e.g. public and private) and mobilizing key ecosystem resources, climate related funding as an example, to support specific ventures with outstanding socioeconomic or environmental impact potential. IDB Lab adds relevant value to those ventures during their business consolidation and expansion and fosters their impact towards solving some of the most pressing development and inclusion challenges of different sectors in LAC (Fintech, Edtech, Healthtech, Agtech/Biotech, etc.).
What you’ll do
- Identify potential reimbursable (equity or loan) climate and biodiversity investment opportunities that are aligned with IDB Lab and GEF objectives and selection criteria.
- Analyze, technically and financially, climate and biodiversity investment proposals, including provide support to Investment Officers during due diligence.
- Provide early assessment and recommendations regarding the potential for mobilizing GEF resources to the CIO and Investment Officers.
- Prepare documentation for IDB Lab and GEF investments.
- Coordinate and liaison with the Bank’s GEF team on operations’ pipeline, design, and approval.
- Provide support to the Investment Officers in the implementation and supervision of GEF funded operations.
- Support Investment Officers in review, approval, process and coordination of disbursements of operations with GEF financing.
- Supervise and coordinate the implementation of selected non-financial activities associated with approved GEF operations, including managing the interaction with clients and other key stakeholders.
- Prepare supervision reports for GEF operations, including all documentation required for adequate monitoring and evaluation in accordance with IDB and GEF requirements.
- Support the activities associated with GEF and IDB Lab audits, including the coordination of client-provided inputs, or other materials as may be required by auditors.
- Forecast financial needs for all IDB Lab approved investments with GEF funding and provide that information in a timely fashion through the Bank’s systems to the IDB-GEF Fund Coordinator.
What you'll need
• Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced degree in areas related to Finance, Business, or a related field.
• Experience:
- At least two years of relevant experience in investment and loan origination with a proven track-record working with both equity and debt, with a clear focus on climate and/or biodiversity finance.
- Work experience in top-tier startups, venture capital and private equity funds, or M&A, with LAC exposure, is a strong plus.
- Experience in the evaluation of projects sponsored by GEF, GCF or/and other similar entities is a plus.
• Languages:Proficiency in Spanish and English, spoken and written, is required. Additional knowledge of French and Portuguese is preferable.

- Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.
Type of contract and duration
- Type of contract: National Consultant Full-Time.
- Length of contract :12 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement for up to a cumulative maximum of 36 months.
