Job Overview
The Morgan Stanley Housing Fellow will address challenges surrounding affordable housing for refugees and new Americans. The International Rescue Committee (IRC) Utah is starting the Housing Affordability Network Project. This initiative aims to build a stronger support system by connecting people with resources and fostering community partnerships to improve access to affordable housing. The two main goals of this project are:
1.Refugees and New Americans are aware and able to access affordable housing resources in their communities on their own.
2.IRC Utah builds strong, lasting relationships with landlords and developers to increase the availability of low-income housing units.
Major Responsibilities:
1.Create an affordable housing resource guide for IRC Utah staff and clients. This will include creating a list of affordable housing and rental assistance programs in northern Utah, focusing on areas with high refugee populations, such as Salt Lake County, Utah County, and Cache County. The fellow will accomplish this by connecting and researching assistance programs to confirm available support and eligibility requirements for refugees and their housing needs.
2.Establish new partnerships with community organizations to expand housing support services for IRC’s clients. The Fellow will research and identify other organizations working on housing affordability and equity, determining which organizations would be a good fit for partnership, and conduct outreach and facilitate meetings to explore ways to collaborate in supporting refugee housing needs.
3.Build partnerships with housing developers and/or landlords to secure more low-income units for refugees and New Americans. The Fellow will conduct research to identify potential housing developers and city planners open to working with refugee populations; facilitate meetings with these potential partners to discuss opportunities for securing low-income units in new developments; and coordinate with IRC Utah leadership to establish agreements with developers for dedicated low-income housing.
4.Research affordable areas outside of Salt Lake County that provide access to resources and economic opportunities and map out potential relocation areas where refugees could thrive.
5.Curate and host trainings and workshops for clients around knowing their rights and responsibilities in a rental in the United States.
