The WFP Kenya Country Office (KCO) implements an Internship Programme designed to deepen understanding of the United Nations by providing practical, hands-on experience within the World Food Programme. The programme offers graduate students an opportunity to gain professional exposure in their respective fields of study and specialization, both within programme areas and across various offices in the country.
 

The Country Office is now seeking to select Interns for Cohort 3, 2026, for an eight-month programme with opportunities in both Field Offices and the Nairobi Office. For Field Office placements, priority will be given to candidates from the surrounding local communities to enhance impact.
 

Applicants must be Kenyan nationals, recent graduates, and residents of Kenya. Candidates placed in field locations will be responsible for arranging their own accommodation near the respective duty stations. Proficiency in the local language is required for this role to ensure effective communication with stakeholders.

Intern - Programme Support, Marsabit

Marsabit County, the largest in Kenya, covers 70,961 square kilometres and shares borders with Ethiopia as well as neighbouring counties including Turkana, Wajir, Isiolo, and Samburu. The county capital is Marsabit. According to the 2019 census, the county has a population of 459,785, of whom 77 percent reside in rural areas. Approximately 80% of Kenya's landmass—including Marsabit—is classified as arid and semi-arid (ASAL), where pastoralism is the predominant livelihood, supplemented by agro-pastoralism.

The Programme Support Intern will have the opportunity to engage directly in a range of programme activities at the Marsabit Field Office, specifically in areas such as Integrated Climate Adaptive Programming, Ecosystem and Land Restoration, Climate Resilience, Strategic Partnerships with the Private Sector, Youth Programming, Nutrition Prevention and Integration, and Value Chain Development.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Head of Programme and under the general guidance of the Head of Field Office, the intern will be responsible for:

  • Assisting programme leads in coordinating, planning, and implementing activities as outlined in annual and strategic work plans.

  • Supporting programme leads in the design and management of youth agri-business initiatives in collaboration with relevant County Government departments.

  • Contributing to the execution of Anticipatory Actions, ensuring alignment with agreements, timelines, and deliverables.

  • Aiding capacity-building efforts related to Emergency Preparedness and Response, Climate Change Adaptation, in coordination with County Government and target beneficiaries.

  • Participating in the collection, consolidation, and management of information and data from FSCs, MSMEs, SHFs, and FOs, ensuring databases are current and accurate.

  • Assisting in the preparation and drafting of meeting notes, administrative documents, and project concept papers under the supervision of programme staff.

  • Supporting the M&E team in process monitoring to provide decision-making insights and facilitate achievement of quarterly objectives.

  • Ensuring proper filing and secure storage of all relevant programme documentation in accordance with organisational requirements.

  • Taking notes and minutes during key internal and external meetings as required by programme leads.

  • Actively participating in programme meetings at all levels to provide updates, report on progress, and contribute to learning processes.

  • Assisting in the preparation of bi-weekly, monthly, and periodic reports, as well as submitting drafts for review and feedback.

  • Conducting regular reviews of the annual work plan to track implementation progress and advise the programme team on necessary actions to expedite delivery.

  • Supporting budget expenditure tracking and documentation to inform sound financial decision-making.

  • Performing any other duties as assigned.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Develop an internship work plan outlining clear goals, objectives, and deliverables within the first month of onboarding.

  • Submit an internship report and exit meeting notes with your supervisor and Field Office Head at the end of the program.

  • Submit Back to Office Reports after completing any field mission, meeting, or workshop.

  • Timely submit monthly reports highlighting achievement of key milestones, challenges and  propose remedial actions for the same

Qualifications Required:

Education: A recent graduate (within the last 6 months) with a Bachelors in Agriculture and Food Systems, Climate Change, Livestock, Rural Development, Nutrition, Environment and Natural Resource Management, Watershed Management, Economics, Fisheries, Range Management, Agricultural Economics, Environment and Community Development, Social Science with a relevant focus, or another related technical field.

Language: Fluency in oral and written English and local language.

Computer literacy: Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).

Duration of Internship : 8 months
