Company Description

At CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

Job Description

Introduction

As a Logistics Professional in CERN's Engineering Department, you will be involved in the Future Circular Collider (FCC) study, performing simulations of the logistics chain You will be in charge of the logistics aspects of the FCC study, ranging from surface logistics to underground installation, including the production simulations of items manufactured in large series (e.g. magnets). You will join the Engineering Department (EN), which provides CERN with the Engineering Competences, Infrastructure Systems, and Technical Coordination required for the design, installation, operation, maintenance and dismantling phases of the CERN accelerator complex and its experimental facilities. The position is open in the Handling Engineering Group (EN-HE), which prepares, organises, and coordinates all transport and handling operations for the CERN accelerators and experiments as well as the transport of thousands of conventional items, chemical, and radioactive products per year.

Functions

  • Capture the inventory of equipment to be transported and installed, from standard cables and pipes to accelerator-specific components like magnets.
  • Collaborate with handling experts of the EN-HE group to document the different existing handling processes throughout the logistic chain, from surface buildings to the underground.
  • Define the parameters (e.g. process times, buffer sizes) of each step of the logistics chain of the FCC installation phase based on the previous versions of the logistic model, for each component of the machine.
  • With the support of external experts, program the available software, review the model and validate it.
  • Run simulations integrating the latest information from inventories, identify the needs at all stages of the process, perform risk assessment analysis to define the weak points of the logistic chain and propose remedial measures.
  • Work in close collaboration with the Scheduling Work Package, in order to provide input on transport duration, and iterate the simulations based on the updates of the overall project schedule.
  • Iterate with Integration teams to demonstrate the feasibility of each scenario, eventually update the model with the feedback of integration teams on the space available in underground areas
  • Iterate with the FCC Transport and Logistics Work Package Leader to align resources and simulation scenarios.
  • Use that information to define a logistic strategy for road transport and perform a market survey to identify a procurement strategy.
  • Document the study in a detailed report and present the final and intermediate outcomes in the required meetings.

Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Industrial Engineering, Material Flow and Logistics or equivalent (or a related field).

Project management qualification would be a plus.

Experience:

  • Experience in modelling and analysing logistics processes and simulating logistics scenarios.
  • Experience in modelling and analysing plant production processes and simulating production scenarios.
  • Ability to analyse the outcome of the simulation and highlight the main outcomes of a simulation.
  • Experience in working with multidisciplinary teams.

Technical competencies:

  • Configuration and use of information management systems: in particular for the design and simulation of logistic systems and production plants.
  • Project management.
  • Reporting and Analysis.
  • Knowledge of the Plant Simulation software would be a plus.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
  • Managing Self: taking initiative beyond regular tasks and making things happen.
  • Working in Teams: contributing to promoting a positive atmosphere in the team through an optimistic and constructive attitude; addressing issues.
  • Solving Problems: finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgements based on all the facts available.
  • Communicating Effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point.

Language skills:

Spoken and written English, with a commitment to learn French.
