Job purpose

This position will act as a technical advisor to support national authorities to improve operational efficiency of mine action in GICHD countries of operations. In concrete terms the role focusses on the refinement, contextualization and practical implementation of safe, effective and efficient mine action standards in GICHD countries of operations.

Key responsibilities

-         Work closely with the GICHD Country Programme Team, Standards and Operations Team and other Advisors in various operational thematic.

-         Maintain and strengthen existing partnerships with relevant government institutions, mine action organisations and other stakeholders that are active in mine action.

-         Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of legal and regulatory frameworks that can be linked to or impact National Mine Action Standards (NMAS).

-         Develop and maintain a thorough understanding about worldwide relevant standards, including International Mine Action Standards (IMAS),

-         Promote improved NMAS through workshops, thematic working groups, and direct in-country support with reviewing and drafting of improved, coherent and properly contextualised national standards, policies and procedures.

-         Provide training and technical assistance to relevant authorities on any issues related to improving the operational efficiency of EO survey and clearance. This includes the promotion of innovative approaches to operational planning/implementation of land release activities.

-         Support the development and delivery of training courses in key thematic areas of land release. All training courses are to be tailored to the context and delivered in the official language.

Qualifications and professional experience

-     A minimum of five years of experience working in humanitarian demining, emergency response

-     Experience in delivering training courses to a diverse audience.

Knowledge, skills and competencies

-    Fluency and efficient communication skills in spoken and written Ukrainian and Russian is mandatory, a working knowledge of English is an advantage.

-     Proven knowledge of humanitarian mine action sector.

-     Experience in management or implementation of land release/mine action field operations.

-     Ability to lead workshops.

-     Confident writer and public speaker.

-     Diplomatic with excellent interpersonal skills.

-     Capability to work both independently and collaboratively.

-     Strong attention to detail

The incumbent is expected to work in Kyiv, Ukraine on a full-time basis.
