Duties and Responsibilities

The interns shall support the Dynamic Knowledge and Library Team in the UN Human Rights/OHCHR Global Operations Division, Methodology, Learning, Policy and Practice Section, in fulfilling its duties: to provide quality information and knowledge services and to be an effective gateway to information and knowledge in the area of human rights and, more specifically, of the work of the United Nations in the area of human rights. This Job Opening is intended to recruit three intern positions, with three different profiles: Library profile, Data Science profile, and Communications profile. The interns will support the development of the Human Rights Knowledge Gateway, where thematic knowledge sites are hosted, contributing to research work related to the sites, as well as to the development of content and resources for the OHCHR intranet and knowledge hub. In addition, the interns, depending on their profiles, will contribute to specific workstreams: The intern with a communication profile will support the organization and facilitation of knowledge sharing events led by the Dynamic Knowledge and Library Team. The intern with a Data Science profile will help in the data science efforts of the Dynamic Knowledge and Library team, aiming at automating tasks as the subject classification of Library assets, tagging of websites and documents, as well as extracting and processing relevant, structured information from documents and sites. The intern with a Library profile will help in the daily management of the library, ensuring cataloguing tasks, dealing with clients and managing the physical and online collections. In general, daily responsibilities of interns supporting the DK-Library Team will depend on the individual's background and specific duties may include but are not limited to: Assist in the production of knowledge sharing materials and activities, (such as Videos, tutorials, Website editing and Library guides, Communication campaigns and Knowledge retention and Knowledge dissemination initiatives), Assist in the development and update of Intranet and Knowledge Hub content, Assist library duties as needed, including Research and reference queries, Cataloguing and indexing, Digitization and management of data, Collection development, and support to the organization and implementation of Outreach activities. Assist in other duties as requested by the supervisor (data management, document processing, organization of events).

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for the United Nations Secretariat Internship Programme, applicants must, at the time of application, be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master's degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (i.e. Bachelor's degree or equivalent degree) in the areas of library science, information science, knowledge management and/or a human rights, law or international relations related field, OR have graduated with a university as defined above in one of those study fields AND, if selected, must commence the internship within one year period from the date of graduation.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another United Nations official language - Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish – is an asset.
