Principal Dealer – Credit Market

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) is hiring a Principal Dealer within the Credit Market Group at the Treasury Banking Department.

This role is based in Basel, Switzerland; however, thanks to our status as an international organization, we can hire globally and welcome applications from candidates of all nationalities and located anywhere in the world. Purpose of the job:

As a Principal Dealer - Credit Market, you will manage a portfolio of medium-term investment grade bonds with a primary focus on Sub-Sovereign, Supranational and Agency (SSA) bonds, while ensuring alignment with the Bank’s investment framework and objectives.

You will be responsible for optimising the inherited portfolio by identifying opportunities for new investments, managing risks, and delivering sustainable returns.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Make and supervise investments in various credit debt instruments within the Bank’s investment framework with a focus on SSAs (and potentially US Treasuries).

  • Maintain contact with key SSA issuers by engaging directly with them to initiate deals and promote the BIS franchise.

  • Conduct and coordinate appropriate credit and market analysis to support the above investments.

  • Alert the Head of Credit Markets on event risks and advise on the development of new issuers and sectors to expand and diversify the investment universe.

  • Prepare and present market reports for the group, central bank customers, departmental management and senior management.

  • Monitor the ESG-labelled bond market for investment and reporting purposes.

  • Overview the reconciliation and explanation of the Group’s P&L. Control and monitor the Group’s exposures. 

  • Enhance and develop the trading, reporting, valuation and investment framework.

  • Apply risk framework in context of BIS exposure and the Bank’s policies.

  • Take part in ad hoc special projects as a project member, manager or owner.

  • Collaborate with other units within and beyond the Banking Department (Risk Management and Legal Service in particular) and ensure that BIS objectives are achieved.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with commercial banks to ensure liquidity and competitive pricing across the Group’s trading products.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • A university degree in economics, finance, business, or a comparable field, or equivalent practical experience and knowledge relevant to financial markets.

  • Strong professional experience in fixed income sales, trading, or credit analysis, with a proven track record of expertise in managing and analysing investment grade fixed income markets.

  • Broad knowledge of a range of investment products in major financial markets.

  • Experience in trading SSA bonds.

  • Practical experience with Interest Rate Asset Swaps.

  • Good understanding of Sustainable instruments.

  • Possessing a good network with SSA issuers would be an advantage.

  • Experience in trading US Treasuries would be an advantage.

  • An MBA and/or CFA would be an advantage.
