Have you ever wondered what it takes to work for an organization that literally builds telescopes to explore the cosmos?

In a fascinating new episode of our Impactpool podcast series, Fiona Brazil, Head of HR at the European Southern Observatory (ESO), pulls back the curtain on career opportunities at one of the world's most prestigious scientific institutions.

Discover what it's like to work for the organization that builds humanity's window to the universe.

Beyond Astronomy: A Universe of Career Paths

While ESO is famous for operating the world's most advanced ground-based telescopes, the organization offers far more than just astronomy careers. As Fiona explains, "We have everything from electronics engineers, mechanical engineers, software, control engineers, optical engineers, and of course, quite a few IT specialists as well."

Currently building the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) – a 40-meter mirror behemoth set to become operational by 2030 – ESO needs a diverse workforce spanning multiple disciplines. The organization is actively seeking:

  • Safety engineers for construction sites in Chile's Atacama Desert

  • Cybersecurity specialists to protect precious astronomical data

  • Project managers to coordinate international collaborations

  • Technicians for hands-on instrument work

  • Science communicators to share discoveries with the world

Working in an Extreme Paradise

One of the most intriguing aspects of ESO careers is the opportunity to work at observatories in Chile's Atacama Desert. Staff work on an eight-day-on, six-day-off rotation system at sites that are so stunning they've been featured in James Bond films (Quantum of Solace was filmed at the Paranal Observatory).

"The infrastructure is amazing. Food is fantastic. I have to tell you, you have to be really careful not to put on weight when you go there," Fiona notes with a laugh. The organization provides comprehensive support for international moves, including help with accommodation, education for children, and integration into Santiago's expatriate community.

Breaking the STEM Gender Barrier

ESO is actively working to increase diversity in its workforce, particularly encouraging women to apply for engineering and technical roles. Brazil addresses a common misconception: "One of the misconceptions is that if you're a woman in science or engineering and you come here that you'll be alone. That's definitely not the case."

The organization recently hired a young woman as its new Director of Engineering, exemplifying the leadership opportunities available. Brazil encourages women not to self-select out of opportunities, noting that many qualified candidates undersell their transferable skills.

A Different Kind of Engineering Career

What sets ESO apart from traditional engineering roles? Fiona explains that instead of working under pressure for quick turnaround and low costs, engineers at ESO work on prototypes over longer timeframes – sometimes 20-30 years for a complete telescope project.

"You're working on prototypes and it's the uniqueness of things. The creativity that you have to employ is maybe different in a normal industrial environment," she says. Engineers collaborate closely with scientists to understand requirements and work with international consortia, creating solutions for challenges that have never been tackled before.

Values-Driven Culture

ESO looks for candidates who embody their core values: respect, integrity, accountability, commitment, collaboration, and clear communication. The organization fosters a culture of continuous learning, offering development opportunities and encouraging staff to attend "Astronomy for Non-Astronomers" lunch sessions.

"It's very compelling to work in a place where people are so passionate about the topic," Fiona observes. This passion creates an infectious environment where even during challenging times, teams refocus on their mission to expand human knowledge of the universe.

Getting Your Foot in the Door

For those interested in breaking into scientific organizations, Brazil recommends several entry points:

  • Internships and fellowships for early-career professionals

  • Studentships for those still in education

  • Technical roles for hands-on learners

  • Science communication positions for those passionate about sharing scientific discoveries

The key to a successful application? Demonstrate genuine interest in ESO's mission through research and authentic, well-crafted application materials. Fiona emphasizes the importance of a concise, one-page cover letter that directly addresses the job requirements.

An International Opportunity

Unlike many intergovernmental organizations, ESO isn't restricted to hiring only from its 16 member states. The organization welcomes applications worldwide and will support visa applications for the best candidates, regardless of nationality.

The Bigger Picture

Working at ESO means contributing to humanity's understanding of the universe. As Fiona puts it, staff are building "highways of knowledge" that could potentially lead to discovering life beyond Earth. It's work where you can "tell your grandchildren that you were part of that."

For engineers, scientists, and support professionals seeking purposeful work at the cutting edge of human knowledge, ESO offers a unique opportunity to combine technical excellence with cosmic exploration.
