Duties and Responsibilities

This position is located in the United Nations Information Centre in Rio de Janeiro (UNIC Rio), within the Information Centres Service (ICS), Department of Global Communications (DGC). The UNIC is part of the global network of United Nations Information Centres (UNICs), and UNIC Rio is the principal source of information about the United Nations system in Brazil. It is responsible for promoting public understanding and support for the aims and activities of the United Nations by communicating the work of the UN to a local audience in local languages; engaging local and regional partners; and, overall, bringing the United Nations closer to the peoples it serves. This is an exciting opportunity to support UNIC Rio in its mission to disseminate up-to-date information about the United Nations to Brazilian audiences and provide opportunities for participation, dialogue, and engagement with UN’s work. UNIC Rio was established in 1947 as the first UN Information Centre in Latin America and the Caribbean. The UNIC Rio website is: https://www.un.org/pt/rio The duration of the internship is from a minimum of 4 months to a maximum of 6 months depending on the needs of the Department and availability of the intern. The internship is UNPAID and designed to be hybrid (home-based, with weekly in-person meetings at the UNIC Rio office in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and on a part-time basis. Schedules may be arranged based on request by the successful candidates under the supervision of the National Information Officer and other office staff. The incumbent is under the direct supervision of the Digital Communications Assistant and overall supervision of the Director. Duties may include, but are not limited to: 1) Supporting digital impact strategy implementation: • Assist in the development of engaging digital assets for the UN Brazil (@onubrasil) social media accounts, including cards, videos and explainers. • Support the production of short video content for UN Brazil social media accounts, with a particular focus on TikTok and YouTube, including by preparing and embedding subtitles in English and Portuguese. • Assist in development of advocacy campaigns covering UN priorities, such as climate change, human rights and information integrity, including by preparing digital assets, drafting copies for social media posts and helping organize schedules. • Assist in research on emerging opportunities to increase UN Brazil’s impact on digital platforms. • Support in the translation of speeches, Press Releases and articles (English and Portuguese) for the UN Brazil website (https://brasil.un.org/pt-br). 2) Supporting events management and organization: • Assist in organizing UNIC Rio events, such as press conferences and public outreach activities. • Support outreach efforts with partners and the UN System in Brazil. • Assist in mapping potential partners and sponsors in media and civil society. • Support in updating and expanding existing mailing lists. • Support relationships with suppliers. Daily responsibilities will depend on the needs of UNIC Rio and will take into account current and evolving priorities and global/local events.

Qualifications/special skills

Please note that to qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, b. Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (bachelor's level or equivalent). Applicants must also be: • Be computer literate in standard software applications. • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter. • Have demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. • Have experience in using basic graphic design tools, such as Canva, and in producing content for digital platforms. • Have working knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams. • Ability to draft Press Releases and/or social media posts is desirable. A completed online application (Cover Note and Personal History Profile) is required. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. The Cover Note must include: • Title of degree you are currently pursuing. • Graduation date (when will you be graduating from the programme). • List the IT skills and programmes that you are proficient in. • Top three areas of interest/preferences. • Explain why you consider that you are a good candidate for that specific area. • Explain your interest in the United Nations Internship Programme. In your Personal History Profile, be sure to include three (3) references. Potential candidates will be contacted by the hiring manager directly for further consideration. The selection process may include an interview in Portuguese as well as a written evaluation in English and Portuguese, focusing on assessing the candidate’s communications skills. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. English and French are working languages of the UN Secretariat. For this position, fluency in oral and written Portuguese and knowledge of English are required.
