Duties and Responsibilities

Org. Setting and Reporting The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. UN-Habitat is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat works with partners to build inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities and communities. UN-Habitat promotes urbanization as a positive transformative force for people and communities, reducing inequality, discrimination and poverty. UN-Habitat’s Regional Programme Division (RPD) provides strategic guidance, coordination, and oversight to Regional and Country Offices to ensure coherent programme delivery, effective partnerships, and alignment with UN-Habitat’s Strategic Plan. The Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia (ROEECA), based in Istanbul, Türkiye supports national and local governments, and other partners with the implementation of the New Urban Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG11, which aims for sustainable, inclusive and resilient cities and communities. The regional office supports processes of institutional capacity-building regarding sustainable urbanization and knowledge-transfer between regional counterparts, through key initiatives such as; localization of SDGs, Voluntary Local Reviews, Integrated urban solutions for basic services delivery and others. The intern will be based in the Office of the Regional Director of the Regional Office for Eastern Europe and Central Asia (ROEECA) and will work under the direct supervision of the Regional Director or a designated officer. The intern will support coordination, communications, and analytical tasks linked to programme support, partnerships, and reporting. Responsibilities The intern will support the ROEECA team in the following tasks: • Draft and update talking points, briefing notes, and background documents for the Regional Director’s meetings, missions, and high-level engagements. • Support the preparation of presentations, briefs, and visual materials for internal and external audiences. • Assist in drafting and reviewing official communications, correspondence, and coordination notes with headquarters, regional offices, country offices, and partners. • Support coordination functions across ROEECA, including tracking follow-ups, actions, and key priorities. • Assist in compiling and synthesizing information for reports, speeches, and strategic notes. • Support basic data analysis and visualization, including preparation of charts, tables, and summaries to inform decision-making. • Contribute to knowledge management, filing, and maintenance of the Office of the Regional Director’s documentation. • Assist in organizing meetings, workshops, and regional events (logistics, agendas, and summaries). • Support World Urban Forum (WUF13) mobilization activities in the ECCA region, including preparing briefing materials, mapping of stakeholders, and follow-up coordination. • Perform other related duties as required by the supervisor.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher), b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent), c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent. Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office Suite). Have demonstrated a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. Preferred areas of study: Urban Studies, Urban Planning, International Development, International Relations, Public Administration, Economics, Environmental Studies, or a related field. Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Ph.D. Programme. Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
