About the position.

The main objective of this position is to lead a portfolio of research projects on food safety, agroecology, restoration and agrobiodiversity in Peru, ensuring scientific excellence and financial sustainability, and positioning the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT as a technical reference at national and international levels.

Responsibilities

• Oversee and monitor research projects within the programmatic areas of  agroecology for cacao, including pest and disease management, fertilization, and climate change adaptation, as well as the integration of agroforestry systems (AFS) within a landscape-scale sustainability vision;
• Provide technical guidance to key stakeholders on food safety issues for export crops (heavy metals, pesticides, novel foods);
• Contribute to the strategic agenda for work in agrobiodiversity hotspots, articulating research, conservation, and scaling efforts;
• Coordinate multidisciplinary teams of staff, consultants, students and technicians, ensuring performance, scientific quality, and delivery of results.
• Propose, plan and guide research using robust methodologies to ensure reliable results
• Ensure visibility of results through scientific publications, strategic reports, communication products using different media aligned with institutional positioning.
• Develop and strengthen strategic partnerships with key stakeholders in public institutions, private sector actors, NGOs and local communities to scale solutions.
• Lead the formulation and negotiation of new funding proposals, ensuring a focus on pragmatic solutions to real problems affecting small holder farmers;
• Assume full responsibility for grant management, including financial planning, strategic resource allocation, budget oversight, and direct engagement with donors:
• Represent the Alliance institutionally in national committees, contributing to  technical agendas and public policy discussions.
• Contribute to medium- and long-term institutional planning, participating in the definition of programmatic priorities and resource allocation



Requirements

• PhD in fields related Agricultural Sciences, Ecology, Biology or related fields.
• Minimum of 10 years of experience in scientific research and program management in tropical agriculture, tropical forest restoration or related fields.
• Experience leading projects including strategic grant and budget management, as well as proposal development and negotiation with international donors, and financial management of projects in compliance with donor requirements.
• Proven track record supervising multidisciplinary teams and building local capacity, with demonstrated participation in technical committees.
• Proven experience working with key stakeholders to identify pragmatic solutions for specific agricultural problems affecting small-holder farmers.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate clear messages based on robust scientific evidence to a range of stakeholder groups and media.
• Demonstrated specialized knowledge in at least one of the following areas:  international food safety regulations; management of agroecological systems, restoration of degraded lands; tropical agrobiodiversity conservation; ;
• Strong record of scientific publications in indexed journals, experience presenting results to a range of stakeholders, and demonstrated ability to translate scientific evidence into strategic inputs for policy and decision-making.
• Fluent in English and Spanish
• Experience working in Peru and small holder-managed export crops

Terms of employment 

This is an international recruited position placed at a BG09, in a scale of 14 levels, with level 14 being the highest.
This is a international search and will be managed through a fixed term contract of a one (1) year period, subject to a probationary period in accordance with local legislation, and renewable based on performance and resource availability.
