Every year, millions of people around the world go missing as a result of conflict, human rights abuses, disasters, organized crime, irregular migration, and other causes.

 

The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) is an international organization with its Headquarters situated in The Hague, the Netherlands. ICMP’s mandate is to secure the cooperation of governments and others in locating missing persons. ICMP works globally, with field programs across the world. To learn more about ICMP click here.

 

Internship Setting

The Documentation Unit (DU) is a resource and documentation center including searchable and centralized database containing a serialized index of ICMP documents and third-party publications. In addition, the DU is charged with ensuring document consistency and quality control at ICMP. The selected intern will assist the DU in fulfilling these responsibilities by carrying out certain tasks in the Sarajevo Office. 

 

Main duties and responsibilities 


Under the supervision of the DU Coordinators, the intern will assist in the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the acquisition and retrieval of records and archival materials;
  • Conduct research activities based on archival sources, as requested by the supervisor;
  • Support the document scanning process and contribute to the development and maintenance of a structured digital library;
  • Perform quality control checks on digitalized materials to ensure accuracy, completeness, and clarity;
  • Ensure proper classification, indexing, and storage of digital and physical records for efficient access and retrieval;
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to data protection standards when handling sensitive documents;
  • Assist in improving archival workflows and documentation processes where applicable;
  • At the conclusion of the internship, collaborate with the supervisor to prepare a comprehensive internship report. The report will outline mutual expectations, key experiences, tasks performed, and objectives achieved by both the supervisor and the intern.
  • Other duties, as assigned. 

 

REQUIREMENTS

 

Candidates for this internship must:

  • Currently enrolled in university degree program or a recent graduate;
  • Very good command of written and spoken English and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian languages;
  • Proficiency in standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office) and basic digital file management;
  • Familiarity with document scanning equipment and digital archiving tools is an asset;
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Capacity to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team;
  • Good time management skills and the ability to meet deadlines;
  • Commitment to the underlying objective of helping the authorities and families of the missing to account for missing persons in an impartial and transparent manner.

  

BEFORE APPLYING FOR THIS INTERNSHIP PLEASE CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING:

 

Starting date and duration: 15 April 2026. Internships are available for periods ranging from three to four months. The intern’s preference as to start date and length of internship must be specified with the application.


Minimum age: The intern should be at least 21 years of age at the date of application.


Working hours: This is a full-time position (40 hours/per week; Monday to Friday). As agreed with the supervisor, the intern must provide written notice in case of illness or other unavoidable circumstances that prevent them from observing these working hours.


Flexible work arrangement: The intern will be able to arrange a flexible schedule alternating in-office and remote work upon agreement with the supervisor. ICMP is not in a position to provide the intern with office equipment for remote work arrangements.


Visa and travel: Interns are responsible for obtaining any necessary visas. If required, ICMP may request the host state to assist a selected intern in obtaining visas. Costs and arrangements for travel, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of intern.


Insurance: Interns are responsible for obtaining valid medical insurance coverage and providing proof of the same to ICMP prior to the start of the internship placement.


Conduct and confidentiality: Interns are required to sign and abide by the ICMP Code of Ethical Conduct. ICMP has the authority to terminate any internship due to unsatisfactory performance or conduct.

 

Renumeration: This is an unpaid internship.
