BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 26 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC in Atlanta office was established in 1979 and has resettled over 30,000 refugees from over 65 countries into the Greater Atlanta area. As the largest refugee resettlement agency in Georgia, the IRC in Atlanta resettles an average of 1,000 refugees into Georgia annually and provides additional services and assistance to another 2,500 refugees and asylees.
SCOPE OF YOUTH PROGRAM INTERN WORK: The IRC’s Youth Program addresses the specific social and academic needs of refugee and asylee youth at local schools, primarily at Clarkston High School, and Freedom Middle School, through after-school programs and summer camp. Our programs provide comprehensive academic assistance, including daily homework support, school project guidance, and skill-building workshops that prepare students for long-term success. Beyond academic enrichment and social-emotional learning, we equip students with the tools they need to navigate higher education and career pathways. Through mentorship, college and career readiness workshops, SAT/ACT preparation, and guidance on financial aid and scholarships, we help students explore post-secondary opportunities. Additionally, our programs connect youth with job readiness training, internship opportunities, and workforce development resources, ensuring they are well-prepared to pursue meaningful careers and economic independence. By fostering both academic excellence and essential life skills, we empower students to build a strong foundation for their futures.
The Youth Summer Program for middle and high school refugee and immigrant youth takes place in person three times a week, every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 10:00 AM to 4:15 PM, running from June 9th to July 16th.
Please note that all internship positions are unpaid.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Summer Program Intern will play a hands-on role in bringing our dynamic summer program to life, working closely with staff to create an engaging and enriching experience for students.
Support staff in planning and delivering program activities to ensure smooth execution and engagement.
Assist with logistics for activities, field trips, and workshops, including coordination, scheduling, and preparation of materials.
Engage with students by facilitating discussions, offering academic support, and fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.
Provide mentorship and encouragement to students, helping them develop both academically and socially.
Assist with documentation and file maintenance, ensuring accurate records of student participation, progress, and program activities.
Support program evaluation efforts by collecting feedback, tracking attendance, and preparing reports as needed.
Collaborate with staff and volunteers to enhance program effectiveness and student engagement.
Help coordinate communication with students, families, and partners regarding schedules, expectations, and program updates.
Assist with other administrative tasks and special projects as needed to support the overall success of the summer program.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Excellent communication and writing skills.
Organizational skills with attention to detail.
Ability to work independently as well as within a team and take initiative in a fast-paced environment.
An interest in international and refugee issues.
Commitment to upholding ethical standards and confidentiality in all interactions.
Creativity and initiative to follow through on projects.
Strong desire to help people, and enthusiasm and sensitivity for working in a multi-cultural setting.
Willingness to work 1:1 with students to reinforce math, science, and English literacy skills.
Experience working with youth and/or young adults is preferred.
Familiarity with educational support and systems is preferred.
REQUIREMENTS:
Must submit intern hours on volunteer portal.
Must pass a background check.
Commitment of 15 hours per week for a minimum of 3 consecutive months.
Must be at least 18 years old.
Must be authorized to work in the United States. Please note that we are unable to provide sponsorship for a US work authorization.
This is an in-person role. This role will report to the Youth Supervisor.
The internship will be filled on a rolling basis. We will continue to accept applications until April 10th, 2026, or until the position is filled, whichever occurs first. Internship will begin the week of May 11th, 2026.
