On behalf of the International Livestock
Research Institute (ILRI), the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT is
now seeking for a qualified candidate to serve as a Research Associate– Data
Systems. Both ILRI and The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT are
CGIAR Research Centers.
ILRI works to improve food and nutritional
security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for
efficient, safe, and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15
CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for
the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or
country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as
Central, East, Southern and West Africa

The Research
Associate – Data Systems will contribute to livestock production/productivity
and genetic data management systems (collation, processing, and storage) and
tools for use in the Tropical Dairy Genetic Gain (TDGG) Project Country Program.
The position
will be based at Alliance/ILRI office in Uganda.
Responsibilities
-
Contribute
to livestock genetic data management systems (collation, processing and
storage) and tools for use in the TDGG project
-
Support,
develop and provide training on existing tools and systems used for data
capture, data extraction and reporting
-
Respond
to 1st level support requests from internal and external
stakeholders including assistance in analysis and interpretation of data
extracts
-
Implement
automations and process improvements to maximise efficiency and
effectiveness of workflows and data pipelines
-
Implement
and monitor Quality Assurance (QA) protocols and routines, including safe
and remote back-up of database systems and tools
-
Participate
in software development lifecycle processes to design, implement, test and
deploy new data systems
-
Ensure the
confidentiality and security of information collected and all relevant data
management systems
Requirements
-
BA/BSc degree in Information Systems,
Database Management, Computer Science or related discipline or equivalent
experience
-
At least 2 years of operational
experience working with relational database systems e.g., MySQL, MS SQL
Server including SQL programming, database design, database management.

Experience of data visualization and
reporting tools
-
Knowledge of the application of quality
assurance standards and procedures.

Experience in software programming and
product development
-
Knowledge and experience of Linux o/s
-
Experience and knowledge of cybersecurity and data protection best
practices
·Experience in writing and maintaining Android applications (Highly
desirable)
·Experience in writing and maintaining API endpoints (Highly
desirable)
·Experience of data management for research projects, particularly
biological and agricultural topics
·Experience of ODK/ONA or survey tools
·Use of Github or other version control system
·Excellent interpersonal communication and good personal
organization skills
·Good communication ability in English, spoken and written
·Proactive, taking personal responsibility for good outcomes and
deliverables

Terms of employment
This position is a nationallyrecruited positionbased in Kampala, Uganda. The initial contract will be for 2 years subject to a probation
period of 6 months and is
renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
This
position is graded at BG06 level in a scale of BG01 to BG14 (BG14 being
the highest level according to the Alliance job classification framework
