Thailand hosts one of the world’s most protracted refugee situations, with over 90,000 verified refugees living in nine camps along the Thai Myanmar border. Recent policy developments regarding legal work opportunities for refugees present important avenues for advancing sustainable solutions and fostering social cohesion. However, these opportunities require ongoing advocacy, technical expertise, and coordinated action. At the same time, continued delivery of essential services within the camps remains critical to preparing and supporting refugees during this critical transition.
The IRC plays a leading role in providing assistance in the camps and works in close coordination with the Royal Thai Government to support the implementation of legal work policies affecting Myanmar refugees. Having operated in Thailand since 1975, the IRC continues to aid displaced populations along the Thai Myanmar border, including those residing in the nine refugee camps.
