 We Effect is now recruiting a Financial Controller for the Uganda Country Office in Kampala. The role is part of the Finance Department within our Eastern Africa operations and is offered as a fixed-term position. The Financial Controller will provide overall leadership for financial management, internal control, compliance, and financial planning, helping to ensure that programme resources are managed responsibly and deliver value for intended beneficiaries and partners.

Main responsibilities

As Financial Controller, you will lead day-to-day financial management in the Uganda Country Office, including budgeting, accounting, financial controls, cash flow oversight, reconciliations, and timely reporting for management, donors, and statutory purposes. You will strengthen internal controls, coordinate audits, monitor compliance with We Effect policies and donor rules, and proactively manage financial and operational risks. The role also supports programme teams with budgeting, forecasting, donor proposals, and expenditure tracking, while building the financial capacity of partner organisations through assessments, technical guidance, and follow-up monitoring. In addition, you will supervise finance staff and promote strong collaboration between finance and programme teams to support sound decision-making and accountable delivery.

About you

You are a highly organised and analytical finance professional with a strong commitment to integrity, accountability, and service. You combine solid technical expertise in budgeting, reporting, internal controls, and compliance with the ability to interpret financial information for practical decision-making. You work confidently across multicultural teams and with external partners, communicate clearly, and build constructive working relationships. You are proactive in identifying risks, attentive to detail, and able to manage competing priorities while meeting deadlines. You also have the leadership skills to coach finance staff and support partner organisations to strengthen their financial management practices.

Required qualifications

 ·        Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field from a recognised institution

·        Professional accounting qualification such as CPA, ACCA, or an equivalent recognised certification

·        Minimum five years of progressive experience in financial management, accounting, budgeting, and reporting, preferably within an international NGO or donor-funded environment

·        At least two years of experience in a supervisory, team leadership, or finance coordination role

·        Demonstrated experience managing donor-funded programmes and applying donor compliance requirements, including institutional donors such as Sida, the EU, or similar partners

·        Strong oral and written communication skills in English and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial management systems

Merits

·        Experience in audit coordination, partner financial assessments, and financial risk management

·        Strong knowledge of Ugandan statutory financial requirements and taxation frameworks

·        Experience supporting organisational capacity development for local partners, cooperatives, or civil society organisations
