About us (“We are”)
We are DGT.B.1.SV.2, based in Luxembourg, one of the two units of the Swedish language community at the Directorate General for Translation (DGT). Our mission is to provide the Commission with high-quality translations into Swedish from all EU languages, but mainly from English. We translate texts for different requester DGs and services, in a wide variety of subject areas such as agriculture, regional policy, health and food safety, internal market and industry, education and culture, employment and social affairs.
About the role (“We propose”)
We offer a challenging and stimulating job as a translator and language technology coordinator in a stable and well-integrated unit with some 25 translators and assistants. The documents to be translated are mainly of a legal, administrative, political or technical nature. However, we also translate press material, web texts and documents intended for the general public. As a translator, you have the opportunity to acquire new skills in a rich linguistic environment and use advanced IT tools supporting the translation process. In addition to translating, you will revise texts translated by colleagues and evaluate outsourced translations. You may also specialise in a specific subject domain, develop working methods, be involved in quality assurance and terminology work or act as lead translator for specific translation projects. As a language technology coordinator, you will help promote and raise awareness of available language technology, translation tools and
applications, and AI tools applied to translation. Furthermore, you will contribute to testing and deployment of translation tools and applications in DGT and provide first level technical support and advice regarding the use of these tools and applications. The job involves close cooperation with all colleagues in the unit as well as with Brussels-based colleagues, DGT's Language Technology community and DGT's Field Officers in Stockholm and Helsinki.
Qualifications, experience and skills ("We look for")
We look for a dynamic, team-oriented and reliable colleague with an excellent command of Swedish (mother tongue), very good knowledge of English and knowledge of at least one other official language of the European Union. Very good general IT skills and practical experience with IT applications are indispensable, as well as very good knowledge of language technology and translation tools and applications. An interest and willingness to develop further in this area is also essential since our working environment is highly technical. Studies and/or experience in the fields of finance, economics, science or law are an asset, as is knowledge or experience in the requesting DGs' subject areas. Since we are a small team, versatility and an ability to cover a broad range of the unit's portfolios and text types are seen as an advantage. The job requires very good communication skills and an ability to work closely with colleagues in a team of translators and assistants, since we often deal with shared projects, short deadlines and urgent requests.
