Background

United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women (UN Women) is a global champion for women and girls, established to accelerate progress on meeting their needs worldwide. UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women Libya has strengthened its programme presence in Libya, responding to the complex governance, humanitarian, development and security challenges through its triple mandate. UN Women’s Libya’s premise is that peacebuilding efforts on Women Peace and Security (WPS) and Youth Peace and Security (YPS) Agendas, including political dialogues, conflict resolution, and humanitarian efforts, will be more effective and have higher chances of success if they are inclusive, responding to gendered experiences, needs, capacities and interests the Libyan women across their diversities, this includes supporting women’s participation in peace processes at all levels. UN Women, in Partnership with CSO partners, UN Women programme officers, and RCO, will be providing Knowledge concerning women empowerment, peace and security, and women’s political participation. During 2024, UN Women Libya would be producing Seven (7) Knowledge Products. For This reason, UN Women is hiring two (2) copyeditors on retainer-based contracts for one year position.

Reporting to the Programme/ Project Unit of UN Women Libya, the National Consultant shall support the timely consolidation and editing of high-quality knowledge products to ensure the delivery of complete, coherent, and correctly formatted in adherence to UN Women standards and considering a results-based and gender-inclusive analysis. The National Consultant will work in close collaboration with CSO partners, UN Women programme officers and Residence Coordinator Office for Libya UN, for successful delivery of tasks.

Duties and Responsibilities

The principal tasks under the consultancy are the following:

  • Check language, grammar, and spelling and conduct a comprehensive review of the document with a view to ensuring flow, clarity, and continuity based on UN Women publication guidelines;
  • Ensure a consistent style and format throughout the document and elimination of repetition and inconsistencies;
  • Ensure all footnotes, sources, and references are complete and consistent;
  • Transfer the documents to UN Women publication templates as applicable, carefully ensuring consistent use of fonts, italicized and bolded words, the numbering of headings and acronyms, and other abbreviations;
  • The editor should consult the United Nations Editorial Manual, Gender Inclusive Language Guideline and UN Women Branding Guideline;
  • The consultant is expected to be proactive and work closely to incorporate UN Women Libya staff inputs.

EXPECTED OUTPUTS AND DELIVERABLES

The National consultants will be hired on a retainer contract to support with copy-editing and proof reading on a case-by-case basis. The specific timeline and expected number of workdays for each particular request and assignment will be agreed upon separately between the consultant and UN Women Libya. UN Women will not be committed to rendering any minimum quantity of Services, and for each agreed assignment, UN Women will issue a Purchase Order based on this retainer contract. UN Women shall not be liable for any cost in the event that no services will be requested under this retainer contract.

The details for each assignment will be indicated, along with the instructions for each assignment separately.

FINANCIAL ARRANGMENTS

The expected number of workdays for each deliverable will be discussed between the consultant and UN Women Libya on a case-by-case basis. Payment will be made upon satisfactory completion of a deliverable or as agreed between the consultant and UN Women. Payment will be made for the days actually worked according to the approved daily rate.

Required Skills and Experience

Education 

  • Bachelor degree in linguistics, international relations, social sciences, or other related fields.
  • Experience and skills - At least 5 years of professional experience in writing, reviewing, editing, and proofreading fundraising proposals, concept notes, reports, and other technical and corporate documents in English language, including for and with non-native speakers, is required.
  • Proven knowledge of result-based, gender-inclusive analysis and reporting within the UN system is an asset.
  • Proved strong writing and communication skills (provision of sample works is required).

Experience

  • Expereince and demonstrated experience in conducting and producing research papers and analytical reports is required;
  • Technical knowledge of gender, women’s rights, peacebuilding, or conflict resolution will be considered an asset;
  • Background in human rights, gender equality, and women’s empowerment is desired;
  • Experience working with UN Women or other international organizations is desirable.

Language and other skills

  • Proven excellent English skills is required.

EVALUATION PROCESS

The selection process will be based on the technical qualifications of the candidates.

Technical evaluation criteria

Payment will be made only if the expected results will be achieved, agreed package of documents and reports provided without delay and approval by UN Women.
