Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority. It sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system, and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by monitoring the global environment and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The UN Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is a data-focused, action-oriented initiative that drives deep reductions in methane emissions – the second biggest contributor to global climate change and a key opportunity to reduce warming in the near-term. IMEO’s mission is to provide the open, reliable, and actionable methane data to individuals with the authority to cut emissions at the speed and scale necessary to achieve the Paris Agreement goals. Launched at COP28 in late 2023, the IMEO Methane Data Platform initially focused on methane emissions from the fossil fuel industry. IMEO collects, synthesizes, and publishes methane data from satellites through the Methane Alert and Response System (MARS), through rigorous industry reporting via the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and from scientific measurement studies and national inventories. The IMEO digital ecosystem comprises the following digital platforms, which work together to inform the front-end experience of the IMEO Methane Data Platform: • OGMP2.0 Reporting • Plume Viewer • MARS notifications system • IMEO Methane Data (and public-facing platform) The IMEO Methane Data Platform will launch its 1.0 version at COP29 in early November 2024. The first version of the platform will focus on key audience groups: the private sector, governments, and the public, before considering secondary audiences. It centers around a geo-spatial experience and will initially provide key descriptive statistics to drive transparency and accountability. As part of its roadmap, the platform is expected to progress from descriptive statistics to integrated data displaying actionable insights. The platform will cater to the public, civil society, and media, experiences for private sector environmental managers and countries. To enable the platform launch for COP29, the team requires a writer and editor who can work with teams to produce and edit content that is web-friendly and tuned to the needs of key audiences while meeting deadlines.

Additional Information
• Work closely with programmatic, science, communication, and design teams to create content for the IMEO Methane Data Platform, including: • Home page, landing pages for IMEO multiple tiers. Global, Insight, and Action • Finessing filter text • Geospatial labels • Content on About, FAQs, methodology, how it works, landing page for training and capacity building, and calls to action • Supporting speaking points and messaging on the data platform for use by UNEP spokespeople • Create supporting launch content, stories, and case studies that support the data narrative, including but not limited to: • Historic underreporting on methane emissions and the need to move towards empirical measurement-based methane emission quantification. • Empirical vs. non-empirical data and its importance in methane and climate mitigation • How IMEO integrates top-down and bottom-up empirical data to better understand the real picture of methane emissions. • Case studies that showcase integration of different data streams at multiple spatial and temporal scales. • Capabilities and limitations of satellite remote sensing data. • IMEO's ambition from current state to future goals • Refer to the IMEO Methane data key messages and narratives to support the data visualization and the value proposition while creating or editing content for the platform: • IMEO provides reliable, accurate data to individuals with the authority to take action to curb methane emissions across sectors. • Historically, methane emissions have been underreported through estimates and inventories. However, with the data revolution, IMEO aims to provide a more accurate picture by integrating top-down and bottom-up data from multiple data streams at different temporal and spatial scales. Capabilities and limitations of satellite data • Importance of empirical vs. non-empirical data • Roadmap and ambition for the IMEO Methane Data Platform, moving from descriptive statistics to integrated data with actionable insights • Ensure all content is reviewed and approved by relevant focal points before being integrated into the web platform. • Work closely with the design team to ensure content aligns with the platform's overall look and feel, user flows, and interactive elements. • Collaborate with subject matter experts to translate complex scientific concepts into clear, accessible language for diverse audiences.
