Organizational Setting

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Our goal is to achieve food security for all and make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives’ works in over 130 countries worldwide. The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programs and projects to achieve food security by reducing hunger and malnutrition, developing the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their natural resources in a sustainable manner.

FAO South Sudan supports community efforts to promote rural development and strengthen food security, raise agricultural production, improve efficiency in land and water use, and achieve optimum utilization of forestry and fisheries resources. To this effect, FAO South Sudan is delivering on both emergency livelihood response and resilience building projects with extension¬ services delivery as a cross-cutting responsibility.


Reporting lines

The Extension Support works under the overall guidance of the FAO Representative South Sudan and the direct supervision of the Head of Field Office.

Tasks and responsibilities

• Provide support in all technical natural resource related activities in FAO Wau Field Office
• Manage the nursery operations, including coordination of staff, material and equipment inventory, and ordering all supplies.
• Provide technical assistance to the State Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Production and Fisheries (MAAIF), and target County Agriculture Department with respect to planning and development of agro-forestry systems/technologies.
• Monitoring and follow up of agroforestry activities under the RALP project.
• Train farmers on sustainable agriculture innovations (soil& water conservation and IPM)
• Identify opportunities to develop crop production & productivity, value addition and marketing.
• Support the promotion of technologies and innovations that help increase the production, value of non-timber forest products
• Support environmental risks and food and nutrition assessments, and baseline studies.

Specific Functions

• Assist in the Organization of the regular food security cluster meetings within the mandate areas of Wau field office.
• Support the implementation of emergency, recovery and resilience building interventions in WBGS.
• Support in the promotion of technologies, innovations and good practices that help improve crop production, value addition, marketing and sound natural resource management.
• Perform other duties as required.


CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING\:


Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, Food security, Rural development, Natural resource management or any other related field.
• At least Four years of work experience in Extension and provision of trainings.
• Working knowledge of English (Level C) and knowledge of local languages.
• National of South Sudan

Technical/Functional Skills

• Prior work experience with international organizations, including INGOs, bilateral or multilateral agencies and UN agencies is an asset

• Ability to work in rural and remote areas.
• Experience in community-based development and participatory approaches in particular people centred approach in communicating, creating awareness and monitoring projects.
• Strong written communications skills and interpersonal skills, ability to work with others.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office package
