UNICEF Child Protection Programme prioritizes child protection systems strengthening (focusing on the modelling of a system approach to address CP vulnerabilities/violations in a consistent and coordinated manner), social service workforce development, capacity building for quality CP service delivery, and developing affordable and sustainable family-based alternative care systems.
How can you make a difference?
You will focus on gender and the child marriage programme and related initiatives aimed at empowering adolescents, parents, caregivers and communities. You will support the development and preparation of the Child Protection programme(s) and be responsible for the management, implementation, monitoring, reporting, and evaluation of the relevant child protection programmes/projects within the country programme. You will provide technical guidance and management support throughout the programming processes, and facilitate the administration and achievement of concrete and sustainable contributions to national and international efforts to create a protective environment for children against all harm, and to protect their rights to survival, development and well being as established under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, international treaties/frameworks and UN intergovernmental bodies.
The strategic and effective advocacy, planning and formulation of child protection programmes/projects and the achievement of sustainable results contribute to the achievement of goals and objectives to create a protective environment for children against harm, and all forms of violence and ensure their survival, development and well being in society. Achievements in child protection programmes and projects in turn contribute to maintaining and enhancing the credibility and ability of UNICEF to provide programme services for mothers and children that promotes greater social equality in the country.
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
- An advanced university degree in international development, human rights, psychology, sociology, international law, or another relevant social science field.*A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.
- A minimum of five years of relevant professional experience in social development planning and management in child protection related areas is required; with relevant experience in programme development in child protection related areas in a UN system agency or organization is considered as an asset.
- Experience in both development and humanitarian contexts is considered as an added advantage.
- Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.

UNICEF appointments are subject to medical clearance. Issuance of a visa by the host country of the duty station, which will be facilitated by UNICEF, is required for IP positions. Appointments may also be subject to inoculation (vaccination) requirements, including against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid). Government employees that are considered for employment with UNICEF are normally required to resign from their government before taking up an assignment with UNICEF. UNICEF reserves the right to withdraw an offer of appointment, without compensation, if a visa or medical clearance is not obtained, or necessary inoculation requirements are not met, within a reasonable period for any reason.
