The Forestry Division (NFO) leads FAO’s work in promoting sustainable forest management and providing leadership on the environmental, social and economic dimensions of forestry, including its contributions to poverty reduction and food security and nutrition. It liaises with Members, civil society and the private sector in aspects ranging from development of effective forest policies to forest conservation and management issues and strengthens the role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation. The Division also collects, analyses and disseminates information on the world’s forest resources and on the production, trade and consumption of wood and non-wood forest products.

The position is located in the GEF Impact Programmes\: Drylands and Food Systems Team of the Forestry Division (NFO) at FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.

Reporting Lines
The Forestry Officer (Agriculture-Forestry Linkages) reports to the Senior Forestry Officer/Team Leader of the GEF Impact Programmes\: Drylands and Food Systems Team, NFO.

Technical Focus
Scale up actions on agriculture and forestry linkages including on cross-sectoral collaboration, integrated land-use management and planning, while addressing threats to forests as well as drivers of deforestation, and enhance the contribution of forests and trees to sustainable agrifood system transformation, focusing on the nexus between forestry and crop, livestock, fisheries and aquaculture sectors.

Research, technical analysis and project related services to support the delivery of programmes, projects, products and services.

Key Functions

  • Researches and analyses technical, social, economic, environmental, institutional, and technology related information, data and statistics and/or related policy issues to support the delivery of programmes, projects, products and services.
  • Produces a variety of technical information, data, statistics and reports as well as input for technical documents and web pages.
  • Provides technical support/analysis to various assessments, studies and initiatives and provides technical backstopping to field projects.
  • Collaborates in the development of improved/updated tools, systems, processes and databases.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary teams and/or leads working groups/teams, collaborates with other Divisions/Offices/Centres on work groups and committees and promotes best practices.
  • Collaborates in, provides technical backstopping to and ensures the quality/effectiveness of capacity development activities within Members such as policy support, organizational development and individual learning events including preparation of related information, learning materials, on-line tools.
  • Promotes knowledge sharing and best practices at international meetings and conferences and influences partners in stakeholder consultations.
  • Supports resource mobilization activities in accordance with the FAO Strategic Framework.

Specific Functions

  • Supports cross-sectoral policy dialogue and coordination as well as technical exchange between forestry and the crop, livestock, fisheries and aquaculture sectors, in particular in the context of related FAO Governing Bodies and other relevant Statutory Bodies.
  • Provides policy advice, technical guidance and support to countries as well as to FAO programmes and projects particularly on policy coherence as well as integrated land-use planning addressing threats to forests including drivers of deforestation and forest degradation as well as synergies with other agricultural production systems to achieve sustainable agriculture and forestry landscapes.
  • Supports enhancing forestry contributions to food security and nutrition, poverty eradication and achieving sustainable development including in the context of the Committee on Food Security and other UN Food Systems related processes.
  • Contributes to the development of knowledge products on cross-sectoral and landscape-level governance, integrated land use planning and management and supports Members in developing related capacities for implementation.
  • Supports the development of partnerships and coalitions, including scaling up science- and evidence-based innovation and engagement of the private sector, in particular small-scale producers.
  • Provides technical expertise to resource mobilization efforts related to FAO’s work on forestry contributions to agrifood systems production, including the preparation of new project proposals.
  • Supervises consultants and contracts; manages administrative processes related to activities in his/her area of work.
  • Performs other duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in forestry, agricultural or natural resource management or related fields.
• Five years of relevant experience in working at the interface of forestry with other agricultural sectors at policy and technical levels, at international level.
• Working knowledge (proficiency – level C) of English and intermediate knowledge (intermediate proficiency – level B) of another official FAO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

• Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions.
• Relevant working experience in developing countries and countries in transition.

• Extent of experience in organizing international policy dialogue and technical knowledge exchange.
• Extent of experience in developing and providing technical guidance and organizing training and capacity development, particularly in developing countries.
• Ability to develop project proposals and manage implementation of projects or programmes.
• Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and with public and/or private sector stakeholders, including governmental officials and development partners.
• Demonstrated ability to write and communicate in English.
