Mission and objectives

Context

The Embassy of Japan in Gabon, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ministries of Justice and Institutional Reform of the Transitional Government of Gabon have signed a partnership agreement for a project entitled Promoting accountable, effective, and inclusive justice sector in Gabon. Its aim is to strengthen independent and transparent institutions through a comprehensive reform of the justice sector in Gabon. In addition, the partnership aims to improve access to justice and respect for human dignity. The project will develop and implement citizen-centered justice mechanisms, promote transparency and a more efficient justice system, using a people-centered approach to justice and other innovations developed by UNDP.

The objectives of this projet are to support Gabon to reform its judicial and rule of law institutions by addressing the shortcomings identified in the Gabonese judicial system. The project aims to boost initiatives already undertaken by the Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI) through three main fundamental axes that will carry out a series of reorganizations in favor of the justice sector, to make it more efficient, accountable, and fair. Specifically, this will involve (1) Enhancing justice access though the construction and rehabilitation of justice infrastructure (2) Strengthening the competence, integrity, and reliability of the system with in-depth capacity building of judicial staff and digitalization processes and (3) contribute to the national transition with stronger rule of law and democratization processes.
