OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
To ensure that effective WHO country presence is established to implement WHO country cooperation strategies that are aligned with Member State’s health priorities, sustainable development agendas and harmonized with the United Nations country teams and partners to improve health outcomes and progress towards achieving Universal Health Coverage.
ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING
The Tobacco Control Officer works under the direct supervision of Public Health Officer (Health Promotion and Determinants). She/he is expected to perform his/her duties and responsibilities with the highest degree of efficiency and sound judgment.
The incumbent coordinates activities in the designated areas but does not have direct supervisory or managerial responsibilities.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Function 1 (incl. expected results)
Coordinate with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and relevant entities in matters relevant to tobacco control, achieving results such as:
·Identify and support collaboration between NGOs and continue support the existing coordination mechanism.
·Assist in developing tobacco control messages through social media and community engagement activities.
Function 2 (incl. expected results)
Takes initiative on the implementation of the actions of the National Tobacco Control Strategy, achieving results such as:
·Collaboration with Ministry of Health and relevant partners in implementing the National Tobacco Control Strategy.
·Support the generation of data surrounding tobacco control and its impacts.
·Facilitates capacity building activities of key partners to implement the National Strategy.
·Following up on the implementation of Well-Being Ambassadors at selected universities to promote tobacco-free universities.
Function 3 (incl. expected results)
Contribute to the promotion of physical activity and healthier lifestyle initiatives, achieving results such as:
·Coordinate with the Health promotion team in implementing activities, and programmes for healthy cities, physical activity and other settings.
·Support interventions for a supportive environment for health for the reduction of risk factors and social and commercial determinants of health.
·Contributing to capacity building activities for health promotion activities and practices.
WORK RELATIONS AND PARTNERSHIPS
The position liaises with various partners, including the Ministry of Health and other Ministries, communities, civil society organizations, NGOs, and others mainly to receive and provide data, to answer queries, and to provide input and advice on tobacco cessation.
IMPACT OF THE FUNCTION
The functions support government and other stakeholders implement the National Tobacco Control Strategy. It will help coordinate efforts and disseminate information surrounding tobacco control. This will help ensure that WHO functions and strategies are aligned with Member States’ health priorities, sustainable development agendas and harmonized with the United Nations country teams and partners to improve health outcomes and progress towards achieving Universal Health Coverage.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education Qualifications
First level university degree in health, or public health or social sciences.
Professional Experience and knowledge
At least one year of experience in tobacco control, public health or health promotion
Desirable: relevant experience working for UN agencies, or international organizations.
Language Skills
Excellent knowledge of English and Arabic language.
Other Skills (e.g. IT)
Proficiency in MS Office.

REMUNERATION
Remuneration comprises an annual base salary (Net of Tax) starting at JOD 30,690
