Organizational Setting

Lebanon is exposed to several transboundary animal and zoonotic diseases. While zoonotic diseases represent a direct threat to human health, livestock diseases can have a devastating impact on animal productivity and production, as well as on economic development. Climate change, increased animal-human interactions, land use, and human encroachment increase the risks of outbreaks with zoonotic potential. As changes in livestock production increase the potential for new pathogens to emerge, grow and spread from animals to humans, healthy animals are closely related to healthy people and a healthy environment. Through the One Health approach, FAO contributes to improving animal health to make livestock production more productive and sustainable while achieving optimal health for all at the human-animal-environment interface. FAO-Lebanon works to transform and make livestock systems more sustainable, productive, and resilient.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Representative and direct supervision of the Resilience and Liaison Officer, in consultation with the AFAOR Programme and relevant units in RNE and HQ.

Technical Focus

Provide analytical and technical support on sustainable livestock management, including livestock production, animal nutrition and forage development, animal health and community level advisory services, development and capacity building of producers and producers’ institutions, value chains development, environmental services and biological diversity, in addition to addressing building communities’ resilience, and programmes and projects development in food and agriculture, rural development, natural resources management and agro-marketing.

Tasks and responsibilities

General tasks

• Conduct assessments related to animal health surveillance and early warning systems using FAO tools;
• Conduct stakeholder analysis around the proposed surveillance system and organize a multi-stakeholder consultation to agree on a joint approach and key priorities for the surveillance system.
• Participate in the development of improved work methods, tools and systems in the area of animal health;
• Participate in multidisciplinary project/work teams;
• Collaborate in the development of training tools and materials and the organization of workshops/seminars, etc.;

Specific tasks

• Support the overall implementation of the Animal Health and Production program in Lebanon\: Transboundary animal & zoonotic diseases, Livestock value chains, Livestock in emergencies/Food Security and Resilience, Climate change/Pastoralism.
• Support the coordination of One Health and Antimicrobial Resistance activities among Quadripartite partners (FAO, WHO, WOAH, UNEP) at national level.
• Assist FAO Lebanon in the implementation of OH and AMR Programs.
• Lead the formulation, implementation and monitoring of programs/projects in Lebanon related to Animal Health/One Health and Livestock value chains.
• Contribute to increasing visibility of FAO’s Livestock development and OH activities through advocacy, outreach, and communication, in coordination with the MOA and liaising with civil society, private sector, research institutions and other international partners.
• Analyze (economic or other) the impacts of diseases on animal health, public health, ecosystems, the environment, livelihoods, gender, etc.
• Carry out trainings in subjects related to the animal production and health projects objectives and outputs in order to improve the knowledge and skills of the targeted stakeholders.
• Act as Animal Production and Health focal point for FAO Lebanon.
• Perform other duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

• University Degree in Agriculture, Animal Health, Livestock production, or a related field.
• 6 years of relevant experience in implementing projects and conducting training on animal health and production.
• Working knowledge (full proficiency – level C) of English and intermediate knowledge (intermediate proficiency – level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).;
• National of Lebanon
