BACKGROUND
IUCN Viet Nam (Executing Agency) is responsible for implementing the Fostering Water and Environmental Security in the Ma and Neun-Ca Transboundary River Basins and Related Coastal Areas, Viet Nam and Lao PDR project. The project started early 2024 and will be implemented in 5 years, with diverse activities in Lao PDR and Viet Nam. GEF is the donor and FAO is the Implementing Agency and the national government partners are the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE) in Viet Nam and MONRE in Lao PDR.

The main objective of the Ca/Ma project is to enable Viet Nam and the Lao PDR to address freshwater resource management and ecosystem health in the transboundary Neun-Ca/Ma river basins and coastal zones by creating an enabling environment for transboundary cooperation and action. The PMU project office is in Hanoi.

Within the framework of the project, GIS capability and assistance are needed, the Ca/Ma project is offering an opportunity for GIS & Remote Sensing Intern
JOB DESCRIPTION
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

The intern will learn and practice performing specific tasks in close collaboration with the supervisors to prepare simple maps in GIS formats and perform simple analytical functions with spatial data and SRS (Satellite Remote Sensing) data by the ESRI ArcGIS software or open-source software, including QGIS. These map preparations and simple GIS analysis will be executed within the project in close cooperation with long-term project staff (PMU, IUCN) and several external consultants (short-term) involved in the project. The intern will work in the field or office to fulfil their responsibilities as needed or requested.

The following specific tasks are envisaged under the support and guidance of Supervisors include the following:

• Configuration and customization of GIS/remote sensing free-of-charge software such as the QGIS suite or ArcGIS Pro on the assigned laptop.
• Collection and standardization of existing topographic maps or database(s) of the working area and creation of GIS essential layers at the requested scales (elevation, rivers, dams, towns and villages, roads, administrative boundaries, irrigation networks, surface water areas, forest, and protected areas…etc.
• Develop the base map concepts for Ca/Ma projects, create the map templates and specific thematic base maps as required.
• To collect, edit, and standardize GIS and SRS data from various sources, including free-of-charge satellite imagery from Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1, Landsat 7, 8, and 9, DEM data, and other data related to the environment, water resources, climate change, forestry, agriculture, social-economic, land management, hydrology system, water uses, etc. in the working areas.
• Coordinate with the project team, conduct field surveys using data collection tools, and identify land cover and land use types.
• Land cover and land use (LULC) mapping, using visual photo interpretation on-screen and production of digital land cover maps.
• Manipulate the GIS tools and applications (ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, GEE, etc.) to conduct an initial analysis and assessment of RS imagery to derive the LULC and Land use transformation data relevant to some driving force behind such as deforestation, conversion of forest to agroforestry, etc. in the upper catchment areas (Lao PDR and Viet Nam territories).
• Utilize GIS tools and applications (such as ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, GEE, etc.) to perform an initial analysis and assessment of remote sensing imagery. The goal is to derive LULC data and analyze land use transition related to various driving forces, such as deforestation, conversion of forests to agroforestry, in the upper catchment areas of Lao PDR and Vietnam.
• Assisting in preparing maps and infographics for project presentations and reports.
• Perform other tasks as directed by the supervisor.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
