Overview of positionThe engineering unit in South Sudan provides a wide range of design, engineering & project management services for building, transportation & other infrastructure programs that support our clients humanitarian operations & the communities it serves. The Architect will play a key role within the engineering unit at our clients country office in Juba, contributing to infrastructure projects across the country.
The unit is looking for an experienced Architect with some knowledge of quantity surveying to strengthen its architectural design capabilities. The Architect will be responsible for conducting assessments to understand & define user needs, translating them into design briefs, developing architectural designs & documentation, managing projects, overseeing site supervision & ensuring the successful execution of projects. The ideal candidate should be a confident & capable designer with strong skills in REVIT, ArchiCAD, AutoCAD, SketchUp &other graphic design software.

Our client in South Sudan currently manages one of the largest emergency operations globally. To support its operations & the communities it serves, our client is making significant investments in the development, maintenance & upgrading of office, accommodation & storage facilities in various field locations. Additionally, our client in South Sudan is responsible for developing, rehabilitating & maintaining essential infrastructure for targeted communities.
The South Sudan country office engineering unit oversees numerous projects requiring specialized design expertise. To strengthen its design & project management capabilities, our client in South Sudan seeks to engage an experienced Architect. This position is essential in supporting the development of large scale master planning & site development initiatives.
The Architect’s primary role is to enhance the design, planning & execution of infrastructure projects that support humanitarian efforts. By leveraging their architectural skills, the Architect will create facilities that are both aesthetically pleasing & functionally efficient, while addressing the specific needs of the organization & communities that our client serves.
Key responsibilities include conducting assessments to understand user needs & translating them into design briefs, developing architectural designs & documentation, managing project timelines, overseeing site supervision & ensuring the successful execution of projects. The Architect will also be instrumental in devising innovative solutions to complex challenges, ensuring that our clients infrastructure projects contribute effectively to humanitarian goals & bolster community resilience.
By tailoring designs to the local context, the Architect will ensure that infrastructure is culturally appropriate, environmentally sustainable & resilient to local conditions. Additionally, the Architect will contribute to the capacity building efforts of the engineering unit by mentoring junior staff & facilitating knowledge transfer to strengthen architectural & engineering practices.
Under the overall supervision of the Lead Engineer & reporting to the Design Lead the Architect is responsible for the following duties:
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Conducting assessments to establish needs & requirements.
Performing any other tasks as may be assigned by the supervisor.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Architectural design & documentation:
Create architectural designs, detailed drawings & 3D visualizations.
Ensure designs meet project requirements & local building standards.
Maintain organized design documentation.
Responsible for supporting & enhancing master planning & architectural design capabilities.
Provide creative design input for master planning projects & develop building conceptual designs based on project briefs.
Prepare graphic presentations at both master planning & building scales.
Develop quality plans & ensure effective design coordination with internal & external teams.
Site supervision & coordination:
Conduct site visits to oversee construction & ensure compliance with designs.
Coordinate with contractors & engineers to resolve on site issues.
Stakeholder engagement:
Gather project requirements & provide architectural guidance.
Communicate design concepts effectively in project meetings.
Reporting & documentation:
Submit regular progress reports & project updates.
Maintain comprehensive records of all project documentation.
This role will be reporting to the Design Lead, this position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to impactful projects in South Sudan.
Key competenciesBachelor’s degree in architecture.
A minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience in architectural design, drawing production & specification, with the ability to analyse technical & construction buildability issues.
Site supervision experience is required.
Knowledge & experience in quantity surveying is preferred.
Expertise in architecture & architectural design.
Strong project management skills.
Proficiency in design, BIM & scheduling software, including ArchiCAD, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Revit & MS Project is mandatory.
Ability to interpret project briefs, specifications, client requirements & constructability considerations.
Capable of developing & maintaining client relationships, including leading presentations & client engagements.
Works effectively under pressure & meets tight deadlines.
Excellent analytical, technical & problem solving skills.
Strong communication skills, with well developed written, visual & verbal capabilities.
Excellent interpersonal skills, a collaborative team player with a customer oriented approach.

International experience is an advantage.
Preferably a registered Architect with a recognized international body.
Project management certification, such as PMP & / or PRINCE2, is desirable.
Must be fluent in English.
This role has no team management responsibility.
While the role is primarily based in Juba, it involves extensive travel to field locations.
The anticipated duration of this role is 6 months with a possibility for extension.
