Organizational Setting
The main aim of the FAO country offices, which are headed by an FAO Representative, is to assist governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to achieve food security and to reduce hunger and malnutrition, to help develop the agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors, and to use their environmental and natural resources in a sustainable manner.
Reporting Lines
The Meat Sector Representative Organizations Specialist shall operate under the overall guidance and responsibility of the FAO Representative for Georgia, the technical guidance of the Senior Animal Production and Health Officer (REU) and the direct supervision of the Technical Advisor and in close collaboration with the competent authority.
Technical Focus
Provide technical expertise for the appropriate planning, development and implementation of the FAO project and timely delivery of the project outputs.
Tasks and responsibilities
The assignment of the Meat Sector Representative Organizations Specialist shall include the following tasks and responsibilities\:
• Assess the feasibility of establishment of a meat producer, processor, and trader association in Georgia as a possible pathway for the sector development, in consultation with key stakeholders (companies, government agencies, and international organizations).
• Conduct a survey of industry representatives to assess the operation of existing setups and organizations and provide improvement recommendations.
• Implement a one-day seminar for the Georgian meat industry entrepreneurs covering\:
o The current situation and how it compares to the experience from comparable countries.
o Operational tasks of non-governmental industry organizations and their functions and member services in accordance with global trends;
o Challenges and issues for operation of non-governmental industry organizations, unfair operating practices, changing public attitudes, awareness on local producers and consumers.
• Develop a feasibility report including a proposed model for Georgia, with implementation mechanisms, calculated start-up costs and maintenance models, and SWOT analysis that takes in consideration\:
o Possibilities for addressing key challenges, need for favourable policies, providing valuable services to its members and infrastructure needs.
o Establishment of a platform for networking among industry players which can help members stay connected and informed and fosters partnerships, best practices and collaboration, such as
o Capacity development services for members and collaborators to enhance the skills of farmers, processors, and traders for aspects such as production, quality standards and certification schemes can help improve the overall quality of their products.
o Collecting ad sharing information such as market intelligence, facilitating trade partnerships, and organizing trade missions for access new markets, expanding business opportunities and improving export conditions.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
• University degree in Animal Science, Food Technology, Economy or related field
• At least five (5) years of work experience in the meat sector and its representative industry organization
• Full proficiency (level C) in English language
