About the job

The WASH Officer is responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring hygiene promotion activities within the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) program. The goal is to improve hygiene practices in target communities to reduce the spread of waterborne diseases and enhance overall public health. The officer collaborates with communities, project teams, and partners to ensure hygiene strategies are well integrated and culturally appropriate.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Program Design and Implementation

  • Develop and execute community-specific hygiene promotion strategies.
  • Engage communities through education sessions, awareness campaigns, and participatory activities.
  • Ensure cultural appropriateness of all activities.
  • Create and distribute hygiene education materials.

2. Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Conduct regular surveys to assess hygiene practices.
  • Monitor and evaluate behavioral change using specific tools and indicators.
  • Compile and submit regular activity reports with data-driven insights.

3. Capacity Building

  • Train and mentor staff, CHWs, and volunteers on hygiene promotion methods.
  • Provide supervision and support to field-level hygiene promoters.

4. Coordination and Collaboration

  • Coordinate efforts with NGOs, local authorities, and WASH partners.
  • Integrate hygiene promotion with other programs (WATSAN, CCCM, Protection, Shelter).

5. Emergency Response & Preparedness

  • Implement rapid hygiene interventions during emergencies, including kit distribution.
  • Contribute to emergency preparedness plans and risk assessments.

6. Advocacy and Awareness

  • Lead hygiene awareness campaigns around global events and local initiatives.
  • Advocate for sustained hygiene practices in collaboration with stakeholders and community leaders.

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Environmental Health, Social Sciences, or a related field (Master’s degree is an advantage).
  • Experience: Minimum 2–3 years in hygiene promotion, public health, or community development in humanitarian or development settings.
  • Technical Knowledge: Proficiency in BCC, PHAST, CLTS, and hygiene kit distribution approaches.

  • Strong communication and training skills.
  • Cultural and audience-sensitive material development.
  • Proficiency in participatory methods and behavior change strategies.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
