Compliance Officer Position Overview
The ideal candidate will be a legal professional with a strong focus on compliance. They will work closely with the Legal Director (Compliance) to manage day-to-day compliance operations, develop proactive risk mitigation strategies, and provide guidance on legal and regulatory matters. This role reports to the Legal Director (Compliance), with close collaboration with the Operations team.
Responsibilities
- Global Compliance - Support Avaaz’s compliance operations, including corporate governance, contracts, data privacy, HR and employment, tax, sanctions and regulatory compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
- Operational Support - Manage compliance-related inquiries, including oversight of the incoming compliance requests, task distribution, and cross-functional coordination.
- Risk Mitigation - Develop and implement proactive compliance monitoring systems, guidelines, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Documentation and Research - Create and maintain compliance documentation, conduct legal research, and stay abreast of regulatory developments.
- Advisory Role - Act as a key advisor on compliance issues, contributing to strategic decision-making.
Qualifications
The following qualifications outline the expertise we believe is necessary for this role. You should apply even if you don’t meet all of them:
- Proficiency in regulatory compliance (including sanctions), contract drafting and interpretation, corporate governance, lobbying, and data privacy.
- Demonstrated experience with employer compliance, especially in the US, Canada (and other European countries).
- Law degree with experience in a law firm, NGO, or corporate legal department focusing on compliance.
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
- Proficiency in Google Suite and online communication platforms (Slack, Zoom, etc.).
- Passion for global justice, citizen empowerment, and social change.
- Familiarity with non-profit legal frameworks or international compliance standards.
- Ability to handle ambiguity and simplify complex requirements.

Compensation and Benefits
Salary varies with location and experience and is highly competitive with leading international nongovernmental organizations. The full-package salary for this position ranges from 48.200GBP - 61.100GBP.
