Context

As part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) UN-Habitat in Nepal supports Sustainable, Resilient and Inclusive Economic Transformation as well as in Environmental Sustainability, Climate and Disaster Resilience. In this respect UN-Habitat has been implementing "A Safety Net of Innovative Land Tenure Solutions for Near-Landless Sharecroppers” project in four local government units in Deukhuri valley of Dang district in Nepal- Lamahi Municipality, Rapti Rural Municipality, Gadhawa Rural Municipality and Rajpur Rural Municipality with the financial support of Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the Republic of Korea.

The Project aims to contribute in the NDC commitment of the Government of Nepal to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2045 through supporting 4 municipalities and 1 provincial government to pursue these targets by implementing carbon neutral and sustainable development actions. The Project mainly focuses on AFOLU targets, whereby addressing the longstanding issue of landlessness faced by the most marginalized indigenous communities in four municipalities, which is contributing to land degradation and unsustainable land use in the inner Tarai belt of the country. The Project provides these communities opportunities of improved and sustainable livelihood through climate smart land use, conservation of the degraded land, farming and agroforestry practices.

The Project also focuses on enhancing capacities of the local, provincial and the national government through trainings, policy support and system strengthening on land governance, institutionalization and implementation of the risk sensitive land use plan and climate smart agriculture plan for greener and just development of these municipalities.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of National Professional Expert , the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
i. Participate in field missions and assist on the application of green technology and CSA tools
ii. Support in capacity CSA technology demonstration in farmer’s field
iii. Support in the utilization of available digital tools for enhanced market access and agro-value chain strengthening
iv. Support in the design of appropriate soil and land conservation practices
v. Support in the supervision of regreening activities conducted through community con-tracts
vi. Assist to explore possibilities to use alternative/green energy in the agro-value chain system
vii. Contribute to dissemination of best practices
viii. Support to develop project ideas scale-up work for KOICA, ROK or any other funding agencies
